With some schools not in session due to storm cleanup, plus exams, it was a fairly light Tuesday night. But it was a special night for Bishop Guertin senior guard Connor McGowan, as you’ll see if you read on:
BOYS BASKETBALL
BISHOP GUERTIN 83, SALEM 68
Not only did McGowan lead the Cardinas with 24 points, he eclipsed the career 1,000 point mark. He went into the game needing nine points and reached the milestone as he had exactly that in the first quarter. The game was stopped for a small ceremony.
Guertin led 37-22 at the half and has now won six straight to improve to 8-3. The Cards also got 12 points each from Eli Yousseff, Austin Steinbrueck, and Luca Fabrizio. BG hosts Merrimack on Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 48, SOUHEGAN 38
Sam Disco had a game high 21 points in the Cavs (5-4) win over the Sabers (6-4). Ana O’Donnell (17 points) and Kendall Dunn (eight points) added to the stat sheet for HB. Mya Blackman controlled the boards for HB, which jumped out to a 9-0 lead to set the tone.
Julia Skelton led the Sabers with 13 points, Bryn Siska added eight and Zofia Rosenfield had seven. HB held a 31-12 lead at halftime.
Souhegan’s woes at the free throw line (12-24) proved costly in the end.
“We came to play,” Cavs coach Heidi Moore said. “We got tired at the end but stayed in it.”
HB visits ConVal and Souhegan hosts Oyster River on Friday.
MILFORD 45, SANBORN 30
The Spartans (3-5) outscored Sanborn 23-11 in the second half to snap a five game skid. Shea Hansen led all scorers with 20 points and Lexi Bausha added 16. Maya Remella scored three points; while Trinity Millner, Maggie Pelletier and Jordyn Shaw each had two points. Milford hosts Pelham on Friday.
SALEM 43, BISHOP GUERTIN 34
The Cards fell short on the road at Salem, suffering their second straight loss to drop to 5-6. They’ll try to right the ship on Friday at local rival Merrimack.
Thalia Drapeau had 15 points to try to keep the Cards in it but they got off to such a slow start offensively with only 13 points in the first half. Olivia Baker added nine. BG was shorthanded, missing guard Hailey McGowan.
