The first Friday of the New Year was a pretty good one for most local high school basketball teams. Well, the few that played, that is.

Here’s the brief rundown:

BOYS BASKETBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 62, KEENE 61

The Panthers (2-1) complete the comeback after being down 16 points midway through the second quarter. Keene missed a three pointer at the buzzer after the ball bounced off the iron three times.

Daniel Karavanic tallied 20 points, Shane Lemire had 16 and Francisco Rodriguez added 13. South hosts Alvirne on Tuesday.

SOUHEGAN 70, COE-BROWN 46

Wes Hickman recorded 19 points in the Sabers (3-1) wire-to-wire win. Sean Zerega and Joe Mayo collected 15 and 12 points respectively. Souhegan hosts Hanover on Tuesday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 66, PLYMOUTH 39

The 4-0 Cavaliers continue to roll, led by 17 points from James Arthur and 13 by Will McCoy. They led 36-14 at the half and never looked back.

Alton Williams, Marco Bergskaug and Will McCoy played well defensively.

The Cavs were coming off a title in the TBG Holiday Basketball Tourney, Large School Division, at Lowell Catholic, 63-53 over Shawsheen Tech in a rematch of last year’s finals. Williams was named the Tourney MVP.

HB is at Sanborn on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 56, PLYMOUTH 32

Sam Disco netted 16 points to lead the Cavs (1-3) to their first win of the season. Mya Blackman and Ana O’Donnell added eight points apiece.

HB hosts Sanborn on Tuesday.

COE-BROWN 52, SOUHEGAN 49 (OT)

The Sabers (1-2) fall short in extra time on Friday night. Ella Duclos hit a three pointer and Zofia Rosenfield scored a layup in the final 20 seconds of regulation to force overtime. The teams combined to shoot 69 free throws in the game.

Rosenfield and Nayaa Dineshkumar each scored 10 points, while Julia Skelton and Lanai Hickman put in nine points apiece. Souhegan visits Hanover on Tuesday.
