The high school field hockey, volleyball and soccer tournament seasons have ended.

But don’t sharpen those skates and practice free throws just yet. The local football postseason is just heating up.

There are three locals left in the Football Survivor Pool, and two are playing each other this weekend. Friday night will be the all-local battle at 6:30 at Stellos Stadium between No. 4 Nashua South (8-2) and No. 5 Bishop Guertin (8-2) in the Division I quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 1 p.m., No. 1 Souhegan (10-0) hosts No. 4 Pelham (8-2) in Amherst at Souhegan’s Calvetti Field.

Of course, the rivalry between South and BG speaks for itself. The two teams played a memorable game a few weeks ago with the Cards leading 24-8 at halftime only to see the Panthers rally for a 28-24 win.

Panthers coach Josh Porter is glad it’s a local rival in the playoffs. His team blasted Londonderry 44-15 last Friday while Bishop Guertin beat Nashua North in another local matchup 32-7 in this past weekend’s Division I preliminaries.

The two teams played a year ago in the first round, and now they’ll see each other a round later.

“I think it’s something I’ve learned about our guys the last couple of years, they really get up for these type of (rivalry) games,” Nashua South coach Josh Porter said. “I’m excited for it. It speaks volumes for the product and the level of football that’s in the city of Nashua right now. On the field, yes, we’re rivals, but the three schools seem to work really well together, doing things great for the city of Nashua. I think it’s a really cool aspect, the rivalry, it adds a little bit of extra buzz on top of an already big game.I’m expecting it to be a really fun environment.”

It’s always a fun environment at Calvetti Field when the Sabers play or even practice. They handled Pelham easily during the regular season, 33-6 and it’s also a rematch of a playoff game from a year ago – the Division II championship team that Souhegan won 14-11 over Pelham.

This year the Sabers seem to have picked up right where they left off. Souhegan beat Saint Thomas 47-20 after leading 41-0 at halftime last weekend, and are clearly poised to take the Pythons very seriously. Pelham edged Manchester West 7-6 in their quarterfinal.

“We want to go 1-0 against a very good Pelham team,” Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett said. “Make this week the best week and enjoy every bit of it.”

The winner will take on the winner of No.2 Trinity vs. No. 3 Plymouth in the Division II finals at Pinkerton Academy on Nov. 22.
