NASHUA – Not only is Cam Cook a Knight, now he is also a Warrior.
The Nashua Silver Knights general manager has grabbed a side hustle, as they say – and he will be hustling, as in moving quick. Cook was named this week as the new athletic director at Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School, a part-time position he does not expect will conflict with his Silver Knight duties.
“All loyalty is with the Silver Knights; nothing will get in the way of that,” Cook said. “I have no worry about the conflict between the full-time job (Silver Knights and the part-time job in the fall and winter. Obviously the spring will be (different). But between (baseball) and softball, it’s kind of my bread and butter. … Games are at 4, and at Holman we’re there as much as we can. There are some people we’re interviewing for full-time employment with the Silver Knights that we’re super excited about, so it’s not like I’ll be a lone wolf or anything.
“The stadium’s not vacant if I’m not there … I’ve been eight years at the Silver Knights, I know what needs to get done and when it needs to get done, whether that’s before hours or after hours.”
If there’s any AD job for Cook to do on the side, WLC would be it. The fall has primarily boys and girls varsity soccer, plus varsity golf with home matches at Ponemah Green in Amherst. Winter is just boys and girls basketball at night. All three seasons have cross country and track athletes sometimes competing as a team but often as individuals at meets. Swimmers as well in winter.
Cook said he will have some days where he’ll keep office hours at the school, varying throughout the year.
How did this come about? Some parents who have kids who go to Silver Knights games and the team’s summer camp let Cook know there was an opening at WLC when Amber Brewster-Guarente left to take the AD job at ConVal. He has a family now, so it would be tough to turn down a chance at extra dollars, but he wasn’t looking for anything.
“There is some down time in the Silver Knights (year), these dead pockets of time,” Cook said. “From the interview, I was like ‘This interests me enough. I want to do it.'”
But what makes the WLC job an even more perfect side gig: Cook lives in Wilton, and in fact can walk to the school. Also, Cook said that he had the blessing of Silver Knights owner John Creedon, Jr.
Of course, it’s been baptism by fire in the last week.
“Fall sports are starting so it’s been a little bit of a fire drill,” said Cook, whose Warriors begin the soccer season on Friday at Wilton.
The school is happy to have Cook, as it said in a social media post.
“Cam joins WLC with years of experience with the Nashua Silver Knights and a deep understanding of what it means for an effective Athletics program,” the school’s statement read. “He is excited to continue to grow our programs and enhance the student-athlete experience as a WLC Warrior!”
Kind of goes together with being a Knight, right?
