Tourney Roundup: Good day for Milford soccer, volleyball

It was a Milford kind of Saturday.

The Spartans reached the Division II girls semifinals in volleyball and soccer, not a bad day, right?

Here’s the local posteseason rundown:

NO. 4 MILFORD 3, NO. 5 HANOVER 1

It was a tight fight to get back to the semifinals for the Spartans, as they won the first set, 26-24, lost the second 15-25, but won the next two close sets 26-24, 28-26.

Harper Anderson had 16 kills and four aces, while Savannah Watson added 12 kills, six digs and three aces. Shilo Chappell (seven kills two digs, one block, three aces), Kassandra Cupin (two kills, 32 assists, two digs, four aces) and Paige Davis (two assists, six digs, five aces) also were huge keys.

The Spartans will now take on No. 1 Oyster River in the semis at Pinkerton Academy in Derry on Thursday at 6 p.m.

NO. 1 OYSTER RIVER 3, NO. 8 SOUHEGAN 0

It was a tough end to an otherwise good season for the Sabers, who finished the season 12-7.

GIRLS SOCCER

NO. 4 MILFORD 4, NO. 5 JOHN STARK 0

Kinsley Matsis had two goals while Shea Hansen and Camy Sayward each had a goal as the Spartans return to semis for the first time since winning it all in 2020.

Hansen had two asssits while Matsis and Kianna Figueroa each had one. Delaney Barber had 11 saves in goal.

Milford takes on local rival Hollis Brookline in the semis Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium.

BOYS SOCCER

NO. 4 WINDHAM 1, NO. 5 MERRIMACK 0

The Jaguars won their second straight one-goal tourney game, ending the Tomahawks season at 11-3-4. Windham (13-2-3) moves on to face Nashua South in Wednesday’s semis in Manchester.

BOYS & GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

LOCALS DO WELL IN MEET OF CHAMPIONS

There were no local teams winning an overall state championship or even an individual crown, but they still did well in the big meet at Alvirne as Bishop Guertin’s Eric Fischer, the Division I champion, finished third in 15:24.40.

Guertin was the top team coming in eighth with 256 points, well behind champion Pinkerton (49). Nashua South was ninth (262) and Souhegan 11th (278). North was 13th (285).

Individually, Souhegan’s Jacob Spencer was the next local (33, 16:37.02) while BG’s Sam Prescott was 36th (16:41.12) . Nashua South’s Mattew Motherway (40, 16:45.49) and Isaiah Rodriguez (42, 16:48.33). Other locals in the top 50: Hollis Brookline’s William Scott (44, 16:51.47), Nashua North’s Owen Gagnon (47, 16:53.00), and Souhegan’s Drew Rigaut (16:57.11).

As for the girls, the top local finisher was Souhegan’s Samantha Swanbon, finishing 10th in 18:51.49. Fellow Saber Brynn Siska was the next local (15, 19:01.33) and BG’s Zoe Coler was 20th (19:09.49).

North’s Rosalie Neveu (23, 19:27.41), BG’s Lyla Masson (31, 19:47.46), and HB’s Mae Butler (38, 20:05.00) rounded out locals in the top 50.

Hanover was the team champion with 40 points. Guertin was the only local team in the top 10 (seventh, 217). Souhegan was 13th and Hollis Brookline 14th.
