NASHUA – It hasn’t been the best couple of weeks for the Bishop Guertin High School football team.

Until Saturday night, that is.

The Cardinals likely knew last night’s contest would be that “get right” game, given the Grizzlies winless record. And that’s what it was, with BG cruising to a 40-0 win at Stellos Stadium.

The Cards (5-2 Division I, 6-2 overall) were looking for a fundamentally sound game, and they had that.

“Yes, that’s what we came into this game making sure we were focusing on, fundamentals,” acting head coach Jermaine McKenzie said. “Making sure we’re playing BG football … It’s a good thing.”

It couldn’t have been much better, as the Cards put up 372 yards of offense in just over a half, when the starters were in. They scored on every first unit possession, including their first of the second half on QB Nate Bowen’s third TD pass of the night, a 40-yard strike to Alex Dolan to help make it a 40-0 game just under two minutes in and ignite mercy rule running time. It would have been that way immediately to start the second half were not for a blocked PAT kick and a failed two-point conversion.

Besides his scoring pass to Dolan, Bowen – a perfect 13 of 13 for 189 yards – threw touchdown strikes to Sam Fayad (37 yards) and Hudson Schmitt (28 yards). Guertin had three rushing scores: a 24-yard run by Logan Curran, a 1-yard fourth-and-goal plunge by Jonah Feliciano, and an 8-yard scamper by Hudson Schmitt. BG’s go-to senior back led the rushing attack with 94 yards on five carries.

Defensively, Guertin’s first unit held the 0-8 Grizzlies to 67 total yards, their only scoring threat ending with the first of two Fayad interceptions just before the end of the first half. Dolan also had a pick, as he has returned to full time duty after getting hurt in the preseason.

“World of difference, world of difference,” McKenzie said of Dolan’s return. “We love to see him back and he’s worked hard to come back.”

The consistency on both sides of the ball after consecutive losses to Bedford and Nashua South by a combined 11 points was what the Cards were seeking last night.

“All week long we kind of talked about getting back to BG football and playing our game, and making sure that we were really good on the fundamentals.”

Now the Cards will have to adjust to face a 6-2 Winnacunnet team on the road next Friday. But

McKenzie, who gives the reins back to head coach Anthony Nalen with the latter’s two-game suspension for an ejection in the South game over, says that won’t be an issue.

“We just had two weeks with South and Bedford,” the defensive coordinator said. “So I think we’ll be up for the challenge.”
