‘BYE SUMMER: Some parting thoughts as we transition into fall sports

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Aug 25, 2026

Here’s a few tids and bits as we enter the week in which kids in the area go back to school

Back to school? Already? Ugh.

First, here’s a shout out to now former Silver Knights manager Nick Guarino. A class act, he represented the franchise well and certainly deserved a better fate.

Guarino eats, drinks and sleeps baseball. That’s why it was so hard for him to understand why some of the players would want to bolt the Knights midway through the season at the first sign of trouble. He simply couldn’t avoid the roster destruction during the second half of both of his seasons. But you could tell at the end of this past season his spirit was broken – as was GM Cam Cook’s.

We’ll see what’s ahead for the Knights in the off-season, which will include Nick Guarino honing his craft, coaching at Southern Connecticut State.

—- Don’t forget about the Nashua City Golf Championship which is set to be held a bit later this year, Sept. 19 and 20 at Sky Meadow and Nashua Country Club. The deadline for registration is Saturday, Sept. 5.

The tourney will have something different this year. In addition to its regular and senior divisions. There will e a Professional Divison. Golf pros at Amherst Country Club, Passaconaway, Hidden Creek, Sky Meadow, NCC, Souhegan Woods, Northern Spy, Overlook and Whip-Poor-Will are eligible. They’re also eligible if they reside in Amherst, Nashua, Merrimack, Milford, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Pelham, Windham, Litchield or Londonderry.

— Congrats to the Bedford Post 54 American Legion Senior team. In case you missed it, not only did the squad win the state title at Holman Stadium, it want on to capture the Northeast Regional in Worcester, winning three games on the final day.

Thus, then it was on to the American Legion World Series. They dropped two in pool play to be eliminated but did get a win in their final game. The team featured three locals: Souhegan alums Brayden Hickman and Jaiden Bosquet, and Bishop Guertin alum Caden Siraco. Now it’s back to college fall ball.

—- Back to the Futures League. We’ve all been thinking that the league could add an eighth team in the off-season, but it’s in danger of losing yet another franchise. Norwich has been teetering on the edge for awhile with the city nearly putting Thomas Dodd Stadium and its land up for sale. So that idea was scrapped and the city instead secured a lease for a minor league pro soccer team. So basically the Sea Unicorns, which saw their three-year reign as FCBL champions come to an end, may see their existence come to an end as well. They basically have to negotiate with the soccer team, and that’s said to not be going very well. City officials are making it clear – they can’t afford the upkeep for a baseball tenant that has some 30 home dates. It’s sad. What a difference, where here in Nashua the city wants the Silver Knights to the point of signing them to a 15-year lease.

—- Don’t forget about the Nashua High Panthers Football Alumni Dinner and Fundraiser this Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Nashua Event Center at 2200 Southwood Drive. It’s an event to help raise money for the program, honor alums, and celebrate the history of Nashua football.

— While fall sports at the high schools begins this week, don’t forget Rivier University begins their practices and the regular seasons for men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and women’s volleyball opens up either Sept. 1 or 2.

Let’s face it folks, summer’s over. Went by way too quick.
