TEAM ENERGY: Visiting Titans top Alvirne in fun environment

HUDSON – The atmosphere was electric at the Alvirne High School Corral on Wednesday night for girls volleyball, something that hasn’t been there for awhile.
It would take a visiting team with a ton of energy to survive in that environment as the music blared during time outs and the Bronco student second was into it.
Step right up, Nashua North.
The Titans this year are volleyball’s Team Energy, and they responded with a 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 win. While the 8-9 Broncos have turned their program around following an 0-18 mark a year ago – a great story – the Titans are a legitimate contender at 13-4.
“We’ve got a lot of energy, we’ve got a lot of heart, we’ve got a lot of hustle,” North coach Cassandra Desfosses said. “And one of the refs told us, we’ve got a lot of grit.”
When the Titans (10-1 in the last month) needed a big kill last night, they got it from senior Amaya Gordon, who stood out along with Alvirne’s own kill machine, Hailee Lane. North also saved a lot of points with its defense, helped out by freshman Ava Durden, Patricia So and Laura Ducharme.
But Gordon was a key. “She had a great game,” Desfosses said. “She’s full of heart, that one. She definitely shined tonight.”
After bowing in the first set, the Broncos battled back from an early 7-1 deficit in the second and things were tied a 20 before North won five of the next six points. A couple of net points finished it.
Set no. 3 was heartbreaking for Alvirne, which had slim leads throughout before Gordon kills gave North 24-23 and 25-24 leads. Then a hit by Amelia Hebert clinched it.
“It would have been nice to sneak a couple out,” Broncos coach Jason Lewis said. “Senior Night and all … trying to battle the rest of the night, we just couldn’t put the run together that we needed.
“But coming from 0-18 last year, and now we’re in the playoffs, that’s a pretty big deal. I’m really proud of these girls, they put in a lot of effort. They want it.”
Lane certainly did with 13 kills and three blocks.
“She can rip, she’s come a long way,” Lewis said. “It’s been fun this year seeing the growth. Last year I started a lot of sophomores, they bumped up, I’ve got six juniors that will be seniors next year.”
Also for Alvirne, Mena Lewis had 18 assists and a kill, while Ava Ellis (three kills), and Victoria Supa (two kills) and Lisa Amadi (four blocks) also helped out.

North has had 2-0 leads in the past and not held on or matches were extended. But this time they fought to get a finish.
“That’s the fun part about being with the girls,” Desfosses said. “They do these tests. They’re like, ‘We’re down by eight, can we make it back? Yes we can. We’re down two sets, can we come back? Yes.’
So they’ve proven all these little tests, which is awesome, which hopefully carries over well for us in the playoffs.”
