HS Roundup: South volleyball halts streak; HB field hockey wins
The Nashua High School North field hockey team wasn’t the only local team to celebrate the end of a tough stretch Wednesday. Now, the Nashua South girls volleyball team hasn’t gone eight years with out a win, just a few weeks, but that drought ended. Add big field hockey wins by Hollis Brookline and Bishop Guertin and there’s some things to be happy about:
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
NASHUA SOUTH 3, MERRIMACK 0
The Panthers picked a good night — Senior Night — to halt their 10 match losing streak with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 sweep of local rival Merrimack.
The Panthers were fittingly led by their seniors as Rebecca Macdonald had four kills, four digs, two blocks and two aces, while Rebecca Walters (two aces, 11 digs, 10 assists) and Addison Campbell (six kills 16 digs, two aces) were senior keys as well.
For Merrimack (3-14), Bella Stiles (13 assists, 10 digs), Emily Fagan (11 digs) and Lucy Althouse (six kills, three blocks) provided a spark.
Now 3-11, the Panthers are at Hollis Brookline on Friday while Merrimack wraps up its season — the ‘Hawks end a week early — on Friday at home vs. Timberlane.
PORTSMOUTH 3, Alvirne 0
The Broncos were swept 25-21, 25-11, 25-15 on the road to fall back to .500 at 7-7.
Sammie Schiller had some key digs against arguably the state’s top hitter in Clipper Roe Beland. Heilee Lane had seven kills, while Lisa Amadi ha four blocks, Mena Lewis had 15 assists, a block, and two aces.
Alvirne hosts Londonderry tonight.
BEDFORD 3, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 0
The Cavs fell 25-19, 25-18, 25-20. Shelby and Hailey Klaassens had eight and six kills, respectively. Max Walsh had 21 assists and Hershey Vedula had solid defense.

FIELD HOCKEY
PINKERTON 8, NASHUA SOUTH 1
The Panthers wrapped up a 3-13 rebuilding season on the down side at Stellos Stadium. Despite going up 1-0 early on a Brooke Berger tip from Keegan Dolan on a penalty corner, the Panthers couldn’t keep that momentum. Meury Navarrete had 17 saves and Lily Hurd two in a combined goaltending effort.
Also playing well for South were Emme Christian, Meenu Dwaraka, Molly Mullaney and Wylie Hart.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 1, PLYMOUTH 0
Anna McGurk’s first quarter goal held up as the Cavaliers improved to 12-2-1. Maddie Barich made two saves plus a huge late fourth quarter clear in securing the shutout win.
HB has a regular season ending game with first place Souhegan on Friday night in Hollis at 6:30.
BISHOP GUERTIN 2, LONDONDERRY 1
The Cards got one of their best wins on the road, finishing the regular season at 8-8 to clinch a tourney sport.
Londonderry winds up the regular season at 13-3.
