NASHUA – The Battle of the Bridge is now over for another year.
Now what?
That’s the task for both the Nashua High School North and South football teams, to move on with the rest of their seasons after the always emotional meeting that ended with South winning 48-34 on Friday night.
The Panthers head out to Keene on Friday night after career performances from QB Cody Jackson, receiver Josh Tripp, etc. It’d be tough to duplicate.
“First thing’s first, we’ve got to travel to Keene, always a tough place to play,” Porter said. “We’re just trying to keep going one week at a time, not look ahead, just do our best. Live in the now. Even one play at a time.”
Late in the game, back Sam Levine got apparently dinged up, as he’s dealing with a sore shoulder left over from opening night. “He’ll be all right,” Porter said. It was more precautionary.”
For North, Titans coach Chad Zibolis said he’s got a lot to take from the game in a positive sense. But he and his 2-2 team have to deal with another potent offense in Bishop Guertin on Saturday night. All the Cardinals did was rally in the second half with a ball control offense, putting up over 500 yards of offense on Saturday night to beat Salem.
“We had some really, really good things in the second half,” Zibolis said. “We had some kids start to tackle better, some kids start to block better, we had some great catches. We did some good things, and stuff we get to move on with.
“Each week is going to be tough. But coming out of this and having a second half where the kids didn’t give up is going to be a huge thing for us moving forward.”
The key in Zibolis’ mind is the attitude the Titans had in the rivalry game.
“We could have sat here and packed it in,” he said. “And they come out and keep scoring, keep scoring, keep scoring. Something like that goes on, you have nothing to move on from that. You can’t talk to the kids about that and having that momentum of scoring, getting that excitement, scoring against a good team, I think our kids got going a bit, a little bit of confidence.”
SIGNIFICANT WIN FOR BG
The win for the Cardinals was big in such a way that it will help them in the point system because Salem will get more wins, adding up to points for BG and the system rewards teams who beat good teams.
“The big thing is Salem’s an outstanding team, we’re going to get a bunch of points from this,” Guertin coach Anthony Nalen said. “They’re going to go beat other teams. So we might get four, six extra points that we otherwise might not have gotten. That’s the biggest part of it, beating somebody out of your conference. That really helps, but it also boosts the confidence. We’ve got to spin right around and play North that put 34 points on South.”
“They’re going to be able to beat anybody all year because of their offense,” Salem coach Steve Abraham said. “Their quarterback’s (Nate Bowen) great – you can’t sack him – and No. 4 (Rocco Roy) is an electric player.
“They’ve got Bedford left. They can win this conference, too.”
BRONCOS HAVE HOPE
Alvirne came into Saturday’s loss to Concord having only scored two TDs on the season, and they put up 17 points.
It’s step by step for Broncos head coach Justin Hufft, who is trying to rebuild the program after graduation took away the numbers and the best players.
“That was a step in the right direction,” Hufft said of Saturday. “The next step is to be able to compete on the field with these teams for four quarters. We’re not there yet, but we’re going to be working toward it.”
Alvirne hosts Manchester Central on Friday night. The significance of that game is the Little Green, at 2-2, will be looking to get over the .500 mark for first time in several years.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE, MILFORD PUSH AHEAD
The Spartans are having a much better time with two straight wins, including Saturday’s 22-12 win over John Stark. Things have been a lot more fun lately an d defensively Jace Wilhemi is leading the way. It will be interesting to see how they match up with Manchester West at home on Saturday.
The Cavs, meanwhile, are trying to put things together at 0-4. New HB coach Pat Gendron is looking for building blocks, and one may be junior wideout/defensive back Cole Duncan who had five catches for 43 yards in the 50-0 loss to Division II title contender Pelham.
“The kid is an absolute stud,” Gendron said. “We just have to build some supports around him.”
