MANCHESTER – Ryland Raudelunas was already a big part of the offense for the Souhegan High School football team.
With top receiver Brody Smith missing the first few games while recovering from an injury, Raudelunas looked for ways to make up for his missing teammate and found himself more involved in the Sabers’ passing attack.
But even with Smith back for Friday’s game against Manchester West, Raudelunas still made a big play in the passing game.
The senior running back took a pass from Michael Fiengo 88 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put Souhegan up by three scores and the Sabers thumped the Blue Knights 33-0 in a matchup of two undefeated teams in the Division II West Conference.
Raudelunas also had a rushing touchdown to go with 118 yards on the ground and another 89 receiving. Fiengo ran for two touchdowns while completing 11 of 13 passes for 189 yards and Smith added 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go with six receptions for 77 yards.
“We scored on every possession in the first half, which was great,” Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett said. “Guys were moving the ball on the ground and through the tackles, on the outside, through the air. I’m proud of the way we executed. They just came out and balled out.”
For the third week in a row, the Sabers (4-0, No. 8 in the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Center/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) held the opposition scoreless, thanks in part to its defensive line.
The group of Jon Bausha, Sean Reardon, Micah Dibble, Owen Wood and Patrick Casey combined to hold West (3-1) to just 29 yards rushing on 26 carries. Souhegan also sacked Blue Knights quarterback Gio Doria three times and had two interceptions, including one by Smith in the end zone right before halftime.
“They flew around on defense, we got stops on first down,” Bowkett said. “That’s a good team, they’ve got good players, and I’m just really proud of the defense keeping them out of the end zone, especially right before the half. That was huge.”
Doria finished 11 of 22 for 119 yards, with Liam King catching five passes for 85 yards while Kingston Green had a team-high 29 yards on the ground.
“I think their guys up front played a great game,” West coach Andrew Provencher said. “They’re physical and I think we had a tough time matching that physicality. We know in the long run we’re going to have to get a lot better there.”
West failed to pick up a first down on its first two possessions, while Souhegan was able to capitalize on a short field on each of its first two. A 29-yard run by Raudelunas set up a 1-yard scoring run by Fiengo to make it 7-0 with 5:22 left in the first quarter.
Raudelunas made it a two-score game with a 7-yard scoring run just 3:10 later.
But on the next possession, the Blue Knights were able to move the ball, getting down to the Sabers’ 11-yard line. The drive stalled there and West turned the ball over on downs at Souhegan’s 13.
A holding call on the Sabers moved them back, and two plays later, a blindside block brought back a long touchdown catch-and-run by Smith. But facing third-and-11 at the 12-yard line, Fiengo found Raudelunas over the middle for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead 7:07 to go before halftime.
“That was a huge moment for us,” Raudelunas said. “It definitely brought all the momentum back on our side for us and it was just a big play. Michael made the right read and there were perfect blocks downfield and I scored.”
Souhegan added another touchdown before halftime, and after a scoreless quarter, Smith closed out the scoring with his touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
