FOOTBALL FRIDAY: A capsule look at calm before storm

It’s the calm, more or less, before the storm. Next weekend we have the Battle of the Bridge, there’s Salem at BG, and Souhegan-West. This week, a lot of games to try to set up those key matchu;ps.

Here’s a look:

TONIGHT

DIVISION I

GOFFSTOWN (0-2) at NASHUA SOUTH (0-1, 1-1)

WHEN: 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Stellos Stadium

LAST WEEK: Bedford 34, Nashua South 14; Nashua North 28, Goffstown 13

LAST YEAR : Goffstown 14, Nashua South 6.

FYI: Last year’s Grizzlies win in the last regular season game typified the Panthers’ struggles vs. the run. That shouldn’t repeat itself this time, as South is looking to bounce back strong from the Bedford loss before taking on rival North next week. Still, the Panthers need to keep an eye on the running ability of Grizzlies QB Shane Lynn plus back Hunter Long. South would like to get QB Cody Jackson back running – Bedford stifled that – but the Grizzlies the first couple of weeks seem to be susceptible to the pass.

THE PICK: South 42, Goffstown 13. Hell hath no fury like a Panther team scorned.

NASHUA NORTH AT MERRIMACK

WHEN: 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: MHS Student Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Bishop Guertin 48, Merrimack 8; Nashua North 28, Goffstown 13

LAST YEAR: North 31, Merrmack 21.

FYI: Tomahawks coach Kip Jackson knew his defense might struggle early on, and it has. North has two ways to beat you, with some speed but also QB Harrison Yoshi plowing ahead. But they got Brady O’Connor’s arm going last week, so the ‘Hawks have their work cut out. Their goal is to at least get the offense able to keep up with Maverick Torres and favorite target Caden Dine, plus remember last year’s loss.

THE PICK: North 35, Merrimack 21. Titans want to be the unbeaten team going into next week’s Battle of the Bridge.

BISHOP GUERTIN (1-0, 2-0) at KEENE (1-1)

WHEN: 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: KHS Alumni Field.

LAST WEEK: Bishop Guertin 48, Merrimack 8; Spaulding 29, Keene 21.

LAST YEAR: Bishop Guertin 27, Keene 24.

FYI: There’s an interesting side note to b this one. Word out of Keene is that Blackbirds coach Shawn DeCost will not coa h tonight, an official decision that may or may not be temporary. Offensive coordinator J.J. Conboy will run the team in his place. The Cards’ offense led by QB Nate Bowen and a ton of skill players is in high gear after just two weeks, but it’s never easy scoring a lot of points in Keene, where the ‘Birds are at their physical best. Guertin is strong up front, and the Blackbirds will rely on first-year starter Brayden French, who threw three TD passes in the season opener.

THE PICK: Bishop Guertin 28, Keene 18. A tough, grind-it-out win for the Cards.

WINDHAM (0-1, 0-2) at ALVIRNE (0-2)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Alvirne HS in Hudson.

LAST WEEK: Salem 48, Alvirne 0; Malden Catholic 28, Windham 6.

LAST YEAR: Windham 14, Alvirne 12.

FYI: If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, which is what former Broncos coach Matt Lee did after losing twice to the Jags in his two years at Alvirne, and also with the Bronco cupboard being bare with a few exceptions, including top back Mike Landmesser. Conversely, the Jags have a solid back/DB in Mike Brearley.

THE PICK: Windham 28, Alvirne 6. The Jaguars aren’t dynamic, and the Broncos will make this a competitive game for a while. Then there’s the irony of Lee’s first win as Windham coach coming vs. his former team.

DIVISION II

HOLLIS BROOKLINE (0-2) at MILFORD (0-2)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Milford HS.

LAST WEEK: Manchester West 37, Hollis Brookline 0; Hanover 35, Milford 0.

LAST YEAR: Milford 48, HB 22.

FYI: This was the Spartans’ lone win a year ago, but HB has better numbers so it’s in some ways a measuring stick to where each team is in its rebuild after two tough weeks for both playing higher competition. QB Steve Nieble will try to move the ball for the Cavs with help from Jacob Velez and Cole Duncan, while Milford, with just a small handful of upperclassmen, will rely on the defense of Jace Wilemi and Joey Schnitzler.

THE PICK: HB 14, Milford 12. Tough one, because the Spartans could have a breakout game, but HB has more numbers it seems.

JOHN STARK (1-1) at SOUHEGAN (2-0)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Souhegan’s Calvetti Field.

LAST WEEK: Pelham 47, John Stark 0; Souhegan 35, ConVal 0.

LAST YEAR: Souhegan 45, John Stark 14 (regular season); Souhegan 34, John Stark 6 (Division II quarterfinals).

FYI: Stark is paced by back A.J. Bellen, who ran for three TDs in the team’s opening 40-0 win over Merrimack Valley, but last week’s contest vs. Pelham proved the Generals aren’t in the same league as the Michael Fiengo-Ryland Radulenas led Sabers.

THE PICK: Souhegan 45, John Stark 6. ‘Nuff said.

DIVISION III

INTER-LAKES/MOULTONBOROUGH (1-0) at CAMPBELL (2-0)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Campbell HS in Litchfield.

LAST WEEK: Campbell 52, Sanborn 29; ILM did not play.

LAST YEAR: Campbell 34, ILM 12 (regular season); Campbell 48, ILM 7 (Division III finals).

FYI: The Cougars just keep on rolling, the offense piling up yards with the likes of Braydon White, Mikey Grace, etc. The Lakers are junior heavy, having lost most of the skill players from a year ago. Mekhi Hackett and Kiernan Donnelly are seeing time at QB and they have numbers at back and receiver. This is Campbell’s annual one night home game for the year.

THE PICK: Campbell 32, Inter-Lakes 12. Same as it ever was.
