NASHUA – They are still the field hockey queens of the city, but not by much.
The Bishop Guertin Cardinals survived a battle with Nashua South, 4-2 on Wednesday at Stellos Stadium, and that’s 48 hours after just getting by Nashua North, 1-0.
But two wins are two wins, and the Cards will take it, even if they may have been tougher than expected.
And will acknowledge that it’s good for the sport. South and BG played to a scoreless first half and the Panthers had taken a 2-1 lead in the third quarter.
“It’s awesome,” BG coach Dakota Bilodeau said, her team now 5-2 and winners of three straight. “They’re (South and North) doing a great job. We try to not play to the scoreboard too much, we had to make adjustments. We did not play well in that first half, and in the second half, making adjustments and getting the ball in the back of the net was the goal, obviously.
“They (the Panthers) were smart and outhustling us in the first half. … They had a lot of shots. Ciki (McIntire) is doing an awesome job, she always does.”
McIntire took the moral victory with how well her upset-minded team, now 1-6, played until much of the last quarter.
“We had so many chances in there,” McIntire lamented. “The whole first half, and that’s been what we’ve been focusing on, not letting down in the defensive transition. It was better today, but still we let in a couple of easy ones. … But they played out of their minds today. They probably played 53 minutes and let down for about seven.”
The game was tied at 2-2 when Guertin’s Sophia Harrington stuffed one past South goalie Lily Hurd (seven saves) with 3:49 left in what was a wild third quarter. BG opened the scoring 28 seconds into the second half on the first of two Addison Daddona goals.
But the Panthers weren’t about to make this another 1-0 victory for the Cards. They pressured BG goalie Ayla Saeturn (six saves) off a penalty corner until Keegan Dolan got one by her to knot things at 1 and then Isabele Picanco scored off a Brooke Berger feed three minutes later and the Panthers had a 2-1 lead.

But alas, Daddona evened things with 5:49 left off a penalty corner and then it was basically BG’s game the rest of the way. Carly Green got the insurance goal on a slap shot from about 15 yards out to account for the 4-2 final.
McIntire liked the work of Wylie Dart, Neenu Dwarka, Emme Christian and Molly Mullaney when all was said and done. The Panthers were not going to back down.
“We have some strong defenders back there, and we struggle at the start of the third quarter, which is when they scored,” McIntire said. “Once we score, we get that confidence that we can score again. We have that scoring power, it’s just a matter of finishing.
“I’m really proud of what they did out there today. It shows what they’re capable of.”
The Cards hope to find out what they’re capable of by the middle of next month.
“We’re developing, we’re young,” Bilodeau said. “Definitely a different year, our older kids need to step up and lead. I think (rallying) just speaks to the coachability of this team … We need to learn and make adjustments in the regular season in order to develop and be mature in the postseason.”
That’s the reign that really counts.
