TK FO0TBALL CAPSULES
It’s a weekend filled with some interesting high school football matchups, espcially tonight’s epic battle of contenders between Nashua South and Bedford. Here’s a capsule look at all the local games:
TONIGHT
DIVISION I
BEDFORD (1-0) at NASHUA SOUTH (0-0, 1-0 overall)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Stellos Stadium.
LAST WEEK: South 36, Malden (Mass.) Catholic 25; Bedford 48, Merrimack 20
LAST YEAR: Bedford 38, Nashua South 14
FYI: These are two of the best teams in Division I and there could be points galore. Last year the Panthers couldn’t defend the Bulldog run, as Bedford’s Brody Helton ran at will, and the Bulldogs pulled away. South also lost receiver Josh Tripp in the first half. While South looks the same, the ‘Dogs have Bennet Matthews as QB and he ran for 163 yads and threw for 70 vs. Merrimack while Helton ran for 206 and four TDs. South has its hands full, despite having an outstanding QB in Cody Jackson and top receiver in Josh Tripp.
THE PICK: Bedford 28, South 21. Closer than last year and the two should see each other again in November.
NASHUA NORTH (1-0) at GOFFSTOWN (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Goffstown HS.
LAST WEEK: Keene 35, Goffstown 21; Nashua North 31, Goffstown 7
LAST YEAR: North 17, Goffstown 0
FYI: Goffstown has offensive weapons in Shane Lynn and Hunter Long that allowed the Grizzlies to put up 282 yards on the Blackbirds, albeit in a losing effort. North’s got that dual QB threat with Harrison Joshi running and Brady O’Connor throwing, tough to prepare for.
THE PICK: North 24, Goffstown 18. Titan Jack Krulowski gets a big sack with the Grizzlies driving late to seal a close win.
ALVIRNE (0-1) at SALEM (1-0)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Salem’s Grant Field.
LAST WEEK: Salem 21, Concord 14; Londonderry 33, Alvirne 7.
LAST YEAR: Alvirne 20, Salem 13
FYI: It was the win over the Blue Devils last season that made everyone stand up and notice the Broncos, but it’ll be tough to repeat that feat on the road. The Broncos will need to stop players like Jordan Zannini (two TDs) and Blue Devils QB C.J. Goss. Alvirne will look to get its offense untracked.
THE PICK: Salem 28, Alvirne 12. Tough road game for these rebuilding Broncos.
DIVISION II
MANCHESTER WEST (1-0) at HOLLIS BROOKLINE (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: HB High School Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Kingswood 28, Hollis Brookline 0; Manchester West 49, Pembroke 0
LAST YEAR: Manchester West 48, Hollis Brookline 6.
FYI: It’s a tough start for the rebuilding Cavs, who ironically should be better than a year ago but the results may not show it as they start with two of the division’s better teams. While the Cavs need to get untracked offensively, West had seven score for TDs and is led by QB Manny Mendoza, who threw for three scores. West will try to key on receiver Cole Duncan, who had eight catches for 96 yards last week, and avoid Gabe McGrath, who had 10 tackles on defense.
THE PICK: West 40, HB 12. Blue Knights pull away after Cavs start strong in home opener.
SOUHEGAN (1-0) at CONVAL (1-0)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: ConVal HS in Peterborough.
LAST WEEK: Souhegan 47, St. Thomas 14; ConVal 21, Kennett 20 (OT).
LAST YEAR: Souhegan 41, ConVal 0
FYI: The Sabers just keep scoring points with playmakers, as Ryland Raudulenas scored four TDs last week – two rushing, one reciving, and one on a 55-yard punt return. The Cougars can do some things, led by QB Kurt Dean and back Wetu Selby. They’re on a high after the OT win, Dean with the game-winning TD. But it’s a sophomore laden team, so we’ll see.
THE PICK: Souhegan 42, ConVal 21. Points aplenty, but the Sabers have more playmakers.
MILFORD (0-1) at HANOVER (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Hanover HS
LAST WEEK: Plymouth 49, Milford 0; Trinity 33, Hanover 10.
LAST YEAR: Hanover 42, Milford 12.
FYI: The Spartans face a tough road, as the Bears will look to bounce back, with back E.J. Frechette a player to stop, while the Spartans will look for another good defensive game from Jace Wilhemi.
THE PICK: Hanover 28, Milford 6. Spartans improve a bit on offense but it’s not enough.
DIVISION III
CAMPBELL (1-0) at SANBORN (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Sanborn Regional in Kingston.
LAST WEEK: Gilford 35, Sanborn 0; Campbell 24, Laconia 6.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Cougars are very methodical and will basically run the ball right down the throats of the opposition. Brayden White, as an example, rushed for 189 yards and two TDs last week. Sanborn had a tough opener and it’s a very young team with just two seniors and a new coach, John Lafferty. Junior Aiden Classen directs the offense behind center.
THE PICK: Campbell 42, Sanborn 6. Could even be a shutout.
SATURDAY
DIVISION I
MERRIMACK (0-1) at BISHOP GUERTIN (0-0, 1-0 overall)
WHEN: 6 p.m.
WHERE: Stellos Stadium
LAST WEEK: Bedford 48, Merrimack 0; Bishop Guertin 35, Panthfinder Tech 8.
LAST YEAR: Merrimack 34, Bishop Guertin 21.
FYI: This could be a high scoring affair, as the Cards got their offense in gear early last week and QB Nate Bowen threw for two TDs and ran for another. There’s another junior QB on the other side, Maverick Torres, who threw for over 200 yards and two TDs in his first varsity start. One note, two-way skill player Alex Dolan for BG is likely out for the season with a knee injury suffered in the preseason.
THE PICK: BG 42, Merrimack 35. Could just as easily be the other way around. Either way points will be scored.
