HS Roundup: North, South volleyball on top; BG field hockey wins
It was a good night for most local high school volleyball teams on Wednesday, and so-so for field hockey. Wilton-Lyndeborough won in boys soccer and Nashua North golfers finished third in one of the closest four-team matches you’ll see.
Here’s a look:
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
NASHUA SOUTH 3, SPAULDING 0
The Panthers moved to 2-1 with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-22 sweep as Hannah Perez led the way with seven kills, three blocks and three digs.
Riley Britton (six kills, six digs) and Lexi McGuire (11 assists, five digs, three aces) also helped out. South hosts Bedford on Monday.
NASHUA NORTH 3, PORTSMOUTH 0
The Titans had one of their better wins of the young season with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of the Clippers.
It was what coach Cassandra Desfosses called “really fun volleyball; everyone contributed and did their job.”
North is at Bishop Guertin on Friday.
ALVIRNE 3, MERRIMACK 0\
The Broncos, after going winless a year ago, picked up their second win of this young season with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-20 win over the rebuilding Tomahawks.
Broncos junior Mena Lewis had 31 assists as she closes in on 500 career assists, currently at 488.
Senior Cori Sevigny (seven kills), Hailee Lane (10 kills), Ava Ellis (eight kills) and Collete Ivos (three aces) were other key contributors.
For the 1-3 Tomahawks, Bella Stiles had 18 assists, while Lily Beaulieu (five kills), Lucy Althouse (three blocks, four kills) and Natalie Powers (four aces, four digs)
Now 2-1, Alvirne is at Timberlane on Monday while Merrimack hosts Bedford on Friday.
MILFORD 3, LACONIA 0
The Spartans swept the Sachems 27-25, 25-17, 25-18 to move to 3-0, as Savannah Watson had 12 kills and five aces.
Piper Greenhalgh led the visiting Spartans with 13 digs while Kassandra Cupin had 35 assists. Milford is at Manchester Central on Friday.
BISHOP GUERTIN 3,CONCORD 0
The Cards enjoyed a 25-18,25-20,25-15 sweep, led by Caitlin Harrington’s 17 kills and 10 digs.
Others key contributors included Deidre Whalen (17 assists), Claudia Daniel (14 assists),Thalia Drapeau (seven kills, one block), Annie Hammond (three kills,nine digs) and Allies Maillet (15 digs).
BG takes on Nashua North on Friday.
FIELD HOCKEY
CONCORD 3, NASHUA SOUTH 1
The Panthers fell to 1-4 despite nine saves in goal by Lily Hurd. The Tide jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Brooke Berger cut the deficit in half with a rebound goal.
Wylie Hart, Keegan Dolan, Emme Christian and Maggie Schmidt all played well for South, which is off until it takes on Salem on the road on Monday.
BISHOP GUERTIN 1, SALEM 0
Speaking of the Blue Devils, they fell to the Cards at Stellos Stadium for their first loss (3-1) of the season, as BG improved to 3-2.
BG takes on Nashua North, which fell 9-0 at Exeter yesterday, on Monday at Stellos.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE 8, MILFORD 0
The Cavaliers (3-0) keep rolling, as they got three goals and two assists from Caroline Crawford and three goals by Anna McGurk.
Paige Shirley had a pair of goals while Megan Eckman and Brooke Bouchard each had three assists.
Milford, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4. The Cavs are at 4-0-1John Stark on Friday in a rematch of last year’s finals, while Milford is at Pembroke that day.
MERRIMACK 5,PORTSMOUTH
Tomahawk goals were scored by Allie Wyand ,Genevieve Hill, Grace Massey, Natalie Gagnon,and Ava Woods.
BOYS SOCCER
WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 3, PORTSMOUTH CHRISTIAN 2
The Warriors moved to 4-1 as Tommaso Alboroghetti scored the game-winner off a set play, his second goal of the game. Arrion Murphy also scored off an assist from Korey Begley.
WLC keeper Jason Caragher had a good game as the Warriors are at Concord Christian on Friday.
GOLF
NORTH THIRD IN QUAD MATCH
The Titans finished third at 206, ahead of Concord’s 207, while host Londonderry (203) won the match just one shot ahead of Manchester Central (204) at Passaconaway.
Both the Titans and Lancers needed to go to the sixth golfer to break ties. North was led by Sam Kobs with a 36 and Tommy Dratch at 39, and Conor Prunier, Joey Lantz and Morgan Barry each had 44.Dawson Bolton’s 45 did the trick as the sixth score to break the tie with Concord for third.
