JOIN THE PARTY! Football started, now it’s other fall sports’ turn
Nashua North's Allison Frye celebrates her first goal with Kailee Deleo, left, during last year's Divison I prelim round game vs. rival Nashua South at Souhegan's Calvetti Field. Frye and the Titans, plus all the other area's fall sports teams, will be practicing starting tomorrow. (Telegraph file photo by TOM KING)
Now it’s their turn.
Football had the run of the weekend, with practices Friday and Saturday and some even on Sunday.
But today, all the other NHIAA fall sports are eligible to start preseason practices.
So welcome back boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, field hockey, bass fishing, golf, and boys and girls cross country. And unlike football, most of these sports don’t need three weeks to get ready. Many soccer teams will open up a week from this Thursday and Friday, on Aug. 28-29, as well as field hockey, heading into Labor Day weekend.
Last fall, we had two soccer titles, with the Hollis Brookline girls putting together an unbeaten season, and Milford edging Campbell in the boys Division II finals. Bishop Guertin won the state title in boys cross country. The Nashua North girls socceer team won classic tournament battles over their city rivals, Nashua South and Bishop Guertin, before falling to Winnacunnet in the Division I semis. And Hollis Brookline won the Division II field hockey crown.
There are several new coaches around the area; one most notably will be with North boys soccer, as Thomas Prentice, with club experience, etc., takes over as Jeremy Zelenas stepped down.
Remember, fall teams in Nashua weren’t able to finish their seasons at Stellos Stadium when it was in disrepair with the surface in early October. Well, the North girls soccer team and South field hockey teams will be practicing this morning at Stellos, which reopened for the spring season.
And so it begins…..
