CONCORD – The Mission continues for the Souhegan High School baseball team.

The squad that takes things one game at a time now has just one game left to complete it.

There can be no doubt that this No. 1, 19-1 team is bound and determined, as it tossed aside a good No. 5 Kingswood Regional team 12-2 in a four-and-a-half inning mercy rule Division II semifinal at Warren Doane Field.

A much closer game was expected, as the 14-5 Knights lost just 3-1 to the Sabers in the second regular season game. But Knights pitching plunked three Saber hitters for a total of five, they committed three errors, and Souhegan took advantage with six runs in the second and six in the third. The talk of the game was Brayden Hickman’s three-run bomb in the fourth over the trees in left field. He also walked and scored another run, and will get the starting mound nod in Saturday’s Division II finals at Manchester’s Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, likely at 7 p.m. The opponent is no pushover, No. 2 John Stark, who ousted Hanover 9-0 in the other semi.

But can the 17-2 Generals – the two teams did not play during the regular season — stop the mission from being completed? Not if they make the mistakes the Knights did.

“We knew we had our hands full,” Hickman said. “We just took advantage of what they gave us, whether it was walks or hit by pitches. And then we ended up finding holes with our bats as well.

“Last year was tough, the whole off-season, having to think about that (13-3 finals loss to Bow). It was rough. A stab in the back every time you think about it. But this year we knew we had the potential of (getting back to the finals), we had great guys in the dugout, great guys on the field, we have a deep roster and just executing every game, being able to go 1-0 in every game.”

That’s been the theme all year. One game, one win.

“We don’t care if we win 1-0, 2-0, whatever, just go 1-0,” Sabers coach Chris Metz said. “However we have to win the game, that’s what we did.”

It was a feel good moment for Sabers pitcher Jaiden Bosquet, who transferred from Bishop Guertin but underwent Tommy John surgery his junior year. At Souhegan he resurrected his career, going 5-0 in the regular season and last night scattered nine hits over the five frames, allowing two earned runs after four scoreless, walking just one while striking out six.

“It’s so easy to go out there every day and rely on such great leather behind me,” Bosquet said. “The guys, we come out every week, and we just perform. … 1-0 every game.”

See a common theme? Another theme is Bosquet was bypassed for All-State, despite five wins and an earned run average around 1.00.

“It’s real personal for him,” Metz said. “It’s personal, man. We’re all taking it personal. We’re 19-1, and we don’t get any respect for our guys that contribute.”

And they had their contributors last night. Drew Reagan had two RBIs with a double while Matt Silk drove in a run.

“They’re a juggernaut for sure,” Kingswood coach Asa Stockton said. “I just don’t think we came ready to play today, unfortunately. We were mentally ready, the game started, and we kind of did a 180. They beat us.”

That’s what the Sabers do.

“It’s a complete buy-in,” Metz said. “They keep going through the process, going through the process, and now the process has taken us back to Manchester. Now we’ve just got to finish it.”
