TOURNEY TIME: Will local diamond teams be able to shine?
Souhegan hopes to celebrate in the next two weks like they did earlier this season after walking off Hollis Brookline. The two teams could meet in the Division II semis next week. (Telegraph file photo by TOM KING)
Will local high school diamond teams shine bright in these next two weeks?
Possibly. The big favorite is Souhegan, undefeated in Division II play and the top seed at 17-1. The Sabers, runnerups last year, are itching to get back to the finals.
Bishop Guertin is looking to get back to the Division I softball finals as well, and the Cards will get one home game to start and then be on the road. But that didn’t stop them last year, right?
Here’s a look at the baseball and softball pairings for locals: BASEBALL (All Divisions)
There are three teams in the mix, starting with No. 9 Bishop Guertin (11-8) which will be at 11-8 Portsmouth on Thursday at 5 p.m. It’s not a bad draw for the Cards, who beat the Clippers 9-5 at Holman Stadium just a week ago. The only thing is BG is on the road thanks to a blown seventh inning lead vs. 3-15 Alvirne. The winner takes on No. 1, 17-0 Pinkerton on Saturday in the quarters.
In Division II, the Sabers get a first round bye and will play the winner of the Kennett-Pembroke prelim on Saturday at 4 p.m.but not in Amherst. Instead, that quarterfinal will be at Southern New Hampshire University. The Sabers beat Pembroke 15-2 back on April 18 and did not face Kennett.
What’s interesting is there’s a potential all-local semifinal on the horizon if Souhegan and No. 4 Hollis Brookline can get past the prelims and quarters. The No. 4 Cavs (13-4) will host No. 13 Pelham (7-9) on Thursday at 4 p.m. HB trounced the Pythons 12-1 back on April 23. The winner faces either No. 5 Kingswood or No. 12 Coe-Brown; HB would host if it survives the prelim.
The semis will be next Wednesday, June 11 at Concord’s Memorial Field at 7 p.m. for either Souhegan or HB or both. The final are Satuday, June 14 at Manchester’s Delta Dental Stadium, the times won’t be known until the participants are decided.
In Division III, Campbell is No. 6 and will host No. 11 Gilford on Thursday. The Cougars just beat Gilford 3-1 in the regular season finale. The winner either goes to No. 3 Bishop Brady on Saturday or hosts No. 14 Raymond in Saturday’s quarters. If Campbell makes the semis, they would play next Wednesday, June 11 at 4 p.m. at Robbie Mills Park in Laconia. The finals are June 14 in Manchester.
Finally, in Division IV, No. 16 Wilton-Lyndeborough (6-11) has a tall task in the prelims at No. 1 Epping. They fell twice to Epping, 13-0 and 10-0 during the regular season.
DIVISION I, II SOFTBALL
There’s four teams in the postseason, all playing in prelims on Wednesday.
In Division I, No. 7 Bishop Guertin (13-5) will host No. 10 Timberlane (10-8) on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Elliott Field. It’s not an easy prelim; the Cards bested Timberlane 8-6 in Nashua back on May 7. The winner goes to face No. 2 Windham (15-3) on Saturday.
Meanwhile, No. 6 Merrimack (13-5) will host No. 11 Spaulding (10-8) in Wednesday’s prelims. The ‘Hawks played a tight one with the Red Raiders back on April 18, winning 3-2. The winner of this would either travel Saturday to face No. 3 Pinkerton or host No. 14 Exeter.
The semis for either Merrimack or BG are at PSU’s Chase Field on Wednesday, June 11 at 5 p.m.; the finals will be Saturday, June 14 at 4:30 p.m. at Chase Field.
There are two local teams in the Division II tourney, both on the road on Wednesday. No. 11 Campbell (8-8) is at No. 6 Sanborn (11-5) on Wednesday at 4 p.m, the winner to face either No. 3 Oyster River or No. 14 Pelham in Saturday’s quarters. The Cougars beat Sanborn 7-3 on the road back in April 21.
No. 12 Milford (7-9) will be at No. 5 Merrimack Valley (11-5) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.; the winner gets either No. 4 ConVal or No. 13 Kennett on Saturday. Milford and Merrimack Valley did not play during the regular season.
The semis are Wednesday, June 11 at PSU’s DM Field at 5 and 7 p.m. with the finals at 7 p.m. on the same site on Saturday, June 14.
