The NHIAA team tennis tourney pairings, as expected, were finally released Tuesday morning and today we have an all local matchup.
In the boys Division I prelims, No. 7 Bishop Guertin (8-5) will host No. 10 Nashua North (5-8) today at 4 p.m. The two teams did not face each other during the regular season. They’re the only two locals in the Division I tourney, and the winner will face No. 2 Bedford (13-1) in Bedford on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
In Divison II boys, two locals will play in today’s first round and two will receive byes. No. 11 Alvirne (6-8) will be at No. 6 Lebanon (9-5) and No. 10 Merrimack (6-8) will be at No. 7 Bow (8-6) at 4 p.m. A win puts Merrimack at No. 2,14-0 Winnacunnet on Thursday in the quarters while Alvirne with a win would play at No.3 Hollis Brookline (11-3). The other local, No.5 Souhegan (9-5) will be at No. 4 Portsmouth (11-3) in the quarters on Thursday.
In the regualar season, Alvrne beat Lebanon 5-4 on the road two weeks ago, while Merrimack also beat Bow on the road 5-4, so today should be interesting.
GIRLS START WEDNESDAY
Souhegan (14-0) is arguably the best girls team in the area, getting as expected the No. 1 seed in Division II and a first round bye. The Sabers would play the winner of Wednesday’s prelim between No. 9 Bow at No. 8 Kingswood (both 7-7) in Friday’s quarterfinals at Camp Young Judea in Amherst.
On Wednesday, in Division I, both Nashua North and South will host prelims. The No. 7 Panthers (9-5) will host No. 10 Keene (6-8) while the No. 6 Titans (9-4) will host No. 11 Salem (6-8). North edged Salem 5-4 in mid-April while South beat Keene 6-3 in the season opener. Wins by both would put South at No. 2 Bedford (12-2) and North at No. 3 Hanover (11-3) in Friday’s quarters.
Bishop Guertin (No.5, 10-4) earned a first-round bye and will travel to face No. 4 Pinkerton (11-3) in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Astros edged BG 5-4 in a match just completed (suspension) this past Saturday.
Three other locals are the Division II tourney, and two more have byes. No. 3 Alvirne (12-2) will host the winner of the No. 6 Bow vs. No. 11 Timberlane prelim in Friday’s quarterfinals while No. 5 Merrimack (9-5) is at No. 4 Winnacunnet (10-4) on Friday in the quarters. The ‘Tomahawks beat the Warriors 5-4 at home in mid-April. Alvirne swept Bow 9-0 and edged Timberlane 5-4, both at home.
The lone Division II team to play Wednesday will be No. 7 Hollis Brookline (8-6), hosting No.10 Oyster River (7-7) indoors at the Longfellow Tennis Club at 4 p.m. The Cavs beat Oyster River 8-1 in Durham some five weeks ago. The winner is at No. 2 Portsmouth (13-1) in Friday’s quarters.
