DRYING GAME: Thanks to wet weather, Stellos opening delayed
Things were sunny and dry at Stellos Stadium over a week ago so work could go on uninterrupted, but that hasn't been the case lately so its opening will be delayed a couple of days. (Telegraph photo by TOM KING)
NASHUA – Good things come to those who wait, and that’s the attitude the Nashua High School North, South and Bishop Guertin boys and girls lacrosse teams are going to have to take with regard to Stellos Stadium.
The city rectangular field facility, which has been closed since this past October due to unsafe field conditions, will not be ready for Monday’s North and South boys lacrosse season openers. The hopefully likely first day to play at Stellos could be this Wednesday, when the North girls lacrosse team hosts Salem.
The reason? Blame Mother Nature and the ghastly early spring weather. To finish rolling the rubber into the field turf and firming up the seams takes dry conditions, and this weekend will be anything but according to the forecast. And Saturday’s slushy snow doesnt help.
“They’re doing a great job,” Nashua Athletic Director Lisa Gingras said of the preparations. “They’ve been laying in the rubber this week. They’re not done yet, they need to finish infilling with the rubber, and do a final stretch, and finalize the perimeter, the very edge of it.
“They just can’t do the infilling of the rubber, the brushing, and the standing of the fibers when everything’s wet.”
And with rain overnight into Friday morning and rain/snow Saturday and more rain Sunday, wet is exactly what the field turf at Stellos will be until a dry stretch of weather arrives on Monday.
Bishop Guertin was slated to host Londonderry but word is that likely won’t be able to be played at Stellos, either. The decision was made to give workers the time they need to make things picture perfect.
“We’re not scheduled to go in there until Wednesday so they have part of the day on Wednesday also,” Gingras said. “I just don’t want them to rush to finish just so we can get out there, vs. doing everything right and making sure everything’s done correctly. … Nothing Monday and Tuesday in the stadium.”
North’s game Monday vs. Merrimack will be played at North’s field at 4 p.m., while Nashus South’s game vs. Manchester Memorial will be at South’s field, also at 4.
