RIVIER ROUNDUP: Men’s lax romps; Raiders win awards

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Rivier men’s lacrosse team bested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Mitchell, 28-1, Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 10-0 (6-0 GNAC), while the Mariners fell to 0-5 (0-5 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rivier opened the contest with 11 unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes. Sophomore James DelPrete ignited the scoring with an unassisted tally, followed by back-to-back goals from sophomores Aiden Conley and Liam Conley at 11:34 and 11:28. Aiden Conley added two more goals to complete his hat trick and give the Raiders a 5-0 lead. DelPrete netted his second of the quarter on a feed from first-year Henri Brochu before first-year Andrew Nee scored twice in succession to push the advantage to 8-0. First-year Conor Walsh added his first goal of the afternoon with 3:11 remaining in the frame. Brochu later assisted on DelPrete’s third goal with 2:22 to play, and first-year Lucas Doherty capped the quarter by scoring his second goal of the season.
Rivier maintained momentum in the second quarter. First-year Cooper Goodman found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Tyler Zehr to make it 12-0. A. Conley recorded his fourth goal of the game on Brochu’s third assist before Mitchell scored its first goal at the 9:15 mark. Sophomore Mason Schultz struck twice to extend the Raiders’ lead, and Walsh closed out the half with a last-second goal off a pass from junior Zachary Gessner.
Rivier carried its momentum into the second half, scoring six goals in the third quarter. First-years Drew Mosier and Colin Foley combined for the opening goal of the half. Schultz followed with back-to-back tallies once again before first-year Mario Simeone connected with junior Charles Taylor V to give the Raiders a 20-1 lead. Goodman scored his second goal of the game with 1:45 remaining in the quarter, and first-year Dylan Magazzu registered his first collegiate goal with nine seconds left on the clock.
Mosier opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal before Foley scored three times, with the third coming off a pass from first-year Brogan Arivella, to take a 25-1 lead with 6:30 to remaining in the contest. Maguzza and Gessner added two more goals down the stretch, sealing the 28-1 victory.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
13 different Raiders found the back of the net, with four recording three or more goals. Liam Conley led the team with a career-high 17 ground balls, while going 20 of 22 in the faceoff circle…Foley posted a team-high three caused turnovers…Sophomore Jake Lydon, sophomore Will Corton, and junior Lucas Fitts combined for four saves in the win.

The Raiders return to action Saturday, April 4 for more conference play against Norwich. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Joanne Merrill Field.
GNAC AWARDS FOR LYDON, WALSH
Lydon and first-year attack Walsh were named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Goalie and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after helping the Raiders remain perfect at 9-0 (5-0 GNAC) during a two-game week in GNAC play.
Heading into Monday Lydon was strong in net, totaling 21 saves while allowing just four goals for a .741 save percentage. He opened the week with five saves in the first half of a 23-3 win over Regis (Mass.). The Rowley, Mass. native added 15 more saves while surrendering just five goals, and scored his first collegiate goal with a coast-to-coast run in Saturday’s 10-5 victory over Lasell, a rematch of the 2025 championship game. After this week, Lydon now leads the NCAA in goals-against 3.60, and goals allowed at only 24.
Walsh turned in a big week, totaling nine points on five goals and four assists across two conference wins. The Amesbury, Mass. native broke out with three goals and four assists in a 23-3 win over Regis (Mass.), then added two more goals on perfect shooting in Saturday’s 10-5 victory over Lasell.
SOFTBALL
BERUBE, QUINLAN WIN GNAC AWARDS
Junior classmates Sophia Quinlan and Hailey Berube have been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Quinlan recorded 12 hits in 18 at-bats on the week. Collecting 10 RBI, two doubles, and three home runs. On the week, Quinlan slugged a 1.278, batting a .667 average and had a .687 OBP to secure a 6-0 week for the Raiders. The Salem native opened the week against Anna Maria with three hits, including her first collegiate home run. Following her standout performance on Wednesday, Quinlan kept the hot streak with four hits on six at-bats, adding two more RBI against GNAC opponent Norwich. In a dominant performance against Regis (Mass.) Quinlan recorded five hits on seven at-bats, six RBI, two home runs, going for a perfect 4-4 in game two of the series.
Berube also had a standout week for the Raiders, collecting five wins in 29 innings pitched. The Swansea, Mass., had 26 strikeouts on the week, following a dominant seven-strikeout performance against Anna Maria in game one on Wednesday. Berube dominated in the circle against Norwich, totaling 10 strikeouts on the day. Capped off by a 9-strikeout outing against Regis (Mass.). Berube allowed just three earned runs in 29 innings pitched, collecting a .56 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. Berube appeared in all six games for the Raiders.
Quinlan, Berube, and the Raiders Softball team return to action Tuesday evening against non-conference opponent UMass Boston. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
