Here’s your guide to the key sports April days and nights

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Apr 2, 2025

Is it another month coming up already? The year 2025 is flying by, as we are officially into spring, and there’s that cross between winter sports playoffs and spring sports.

Think about it – This weekend starts a stretch of seven months in which there will be baseball every weekend, regular season then postseason, until the end of October.

So as we have begun April, let’s give you guide to the first true month of spring with key sports dates:

TODAY — WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2

Your Red Sox are in the middle of the three-game set at Baltimore’s Camden Yards. Make a two-day holiday, fly down and catch the 6:35 p.m. game, stay over and then take in the 1:05 p.m. game the next day. Why not? These may be the two best teams in the American League East, even if the Sox haven’t played like it.

THURSDAY, APRIL 3

Conway Arena is the place to be for a special event. Former Bruins great Patrice Bergeron will compete against five high school hockey players, who have a chance to win up to $1,000 for their schools in a special promotion by the New Hampshire Lottery to support public education. Three are skaters – Manchester Memorial’s Frank Tessier, Berlin’s Dillon Boucher, and Ethan Peluso of Windham. Goalies will be John Stark’s Lucas Arien and Manchester Memorial’s Cam Roberge. Unfortunately, this event isn’t open to the public.

This one is: Afterward Bergeron will make an appearance at the new Nash Casino at the Pheasant Lane Mall and do a Q & A with former Nashua and WEEI radio personality Mike Mutnansky.

Something different.

FRIDAY, APRIL 4

Well, it’s the true Opening Day, at Fenway Park, that is. The Red Sox home season begins with an old National League rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, providing the opposition. Now the Major League baseball season is really underway.

It’s also the night of the NCAA Women’s Final Four, with games at 7 and 9:30 in Tampa, Fla. Will Souhegan alum Courtney Banghart’s North Carolina team be there?

SATURDAY, APRIL 5

And this is the night for the Men’s Final Four in San Antonio at the Alamodome with 6:09 and 8:49 p.m. tip-offs (EDT). All the brackets are busted by this point.

SUNDAY, APRIL 6

It’s the NCAA Women’s National Title game at 3 p.m. in Tampa, live TV on ABC.

MONDAY, APRIL 7

And…. the men’s turn with the national title game set for an 8:50 p.m. tip-off (EDT). Who will it be? We say it’s Duke vs. Florida, but this was written before the Thursday night Sweet 16 due to press times. We’ll see.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9

Tennis anyone? High school track also has some events this week, but tennis takes over locally. The BG boys host Derryfield, North and South boys are at Windham and Keene respectively, while the girls teams are home vs. the same opponents. Here we go….

THURSDAY-SUNDAY, APRIL 10-13

It’s a tradition unlike any other: the Masters. Once again, no Tiger Woods, so let’s see who the favorite can be as this will dominate the weekend along with the Red Sox at the White Sox.

MONDAY, APRIL 14

It starts! The full spring season with baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys volleyball added to the track and tennis. Both Nash North and South are on the road, but Bishop Guertin will be home vs. Concord. And there’s a boys lacrosse doubleheader at Stellos, with Nashua South hosting Manchester Memorial-Central, and then North hosting Merrimack. (4 and 6 pm.)

TUESDAY APRIL 15

It’s the first game in the Bishop Guertin boys lacrosse Brian Cameron Era, as Son of Chris guides the Cards at St. John’s Prep at 7 p.m. The BG girls open up at home vs. Londonderry, and catch them when you can as the Cards have only two April home games.

Say so long to the Boston Bruins for the season, most likely. It’s their final regular season game, at home vs. the New Jersey Devils, who also could be done for the season. Last check tickets were going as low as $49. Wow.

And, how about this: It’s the start of the NBA Play-In Tournament. The post season has arrived.

SATURDAY, APRIL 19

Head down to the Nashua North track and you’re bound to see someone you know, as it’s the annual Nashua North Invitational Meet. Tons of teams, tons of athletes, starts at 9 a.m.sharp and by early afternoon they’re done. A great event.

The NBA and Stanley Cup Playoffs are set to begin. The Bruins will be home watching it all with us. The Celtics will have a Play-In Patsie in the first round. Time for a snooze.

MONDAY, APRIL 21

It’s Marathon Monday, and there will be plenty of locals running, for certain. The Red Sox 11 a.m.game will be vs.the White Sox zzzzzz…..Locally Nashua South will visit Bishop Guertin in softball at 4 p.m. while BG is at South at 4, presumably at Holman.

THURSDAY, APRIL 24

It’s the long-awaited Round One of the National Football League Draft. People spend 365 days a year with the NFL Draft being their full time job. It’s amazing. The Patriots will pick fourth. What Browns at No. 2 and the Giants at No. 3 do will basically determine what New England does, presuming the Titans take QB Cam Ward at No. 1. The thinking: Patriots take Travis Hunter if he’s there.

FRIDAY, APRIL 25

Turn the lights on at Holman, as North will host Bishop Guertin at 7 p.m. in the first all-city baseball matchup of the season. It’s also the second night of the NFL Draft (rounds two and three).

SATURDAY, APRIL 26

Ready for college playoff lacrosse? Odds are the Raiders of Rivier will be hosting a GNAC men’s quarterfinal, and if the weather’s good the crowd will be great. A must see at Merrill Field.

Rivier baseball has a doubleheader at Manchester’s Gill Stadium, noon and 3:30 p.m. vs. in-state rival Colby Sawyer. Should be a good take as well; the Raider nine is off to a decent start this season.

While the NHL and NBA postseasons continue, the NFL Draft winds up with rounds 4 through 7, and then we all will assess the wins and the losses.

TUESDAY, APRIL 29

If things go Rivier men’s lacrosse way, the squad will be hosting or at least playing in a GNAC semifinal. They lost a tough one a year ago to Dean College at Merill Field.

And there you go. April, a month with all sorts of local activity. If you thought April was full, well, wait til you see May.
