One more step to the finals.

That’s what three local teams – Milford High School girls basketball, Bishop Guertin boys hockey and Merrimack-Hollis Brookline-Derryfield boys hockey – have facing them today/tonight.

The No. 2 Spartans (16-3) will take on No. 3 Derryfield (17-3) in the Division II semifinals at 5 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy’s Hackler Gym.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Merrimack-HB-Derryfield (No. 5, 12-5-2) will take on No.1 Spaulding (16-3) in the Division II boys hockey semis at Concord’s Everett Arena.

If you choose either of the above, you can then head to JFK Coliseum in Manchester to see No. 2 Bishop Guertin (16-3) take on No. 6 Exeter (11-7-1) in the Division I semifinals at 7:30 p.m.

Let’s take a look:

DIVISION II GIRLS SEMIS

MILFORD VS. DERRYFIELD

The Spartans are the higher seed by virtue of their 37-35 win over the Cougars, who are riding a seven-game winning streak going into this.

In that game, Milford overcame a 14-2 Cougar first-half run and got an Ellianna Nassy hoop with 15.2 seconds left to take a 36-35 lead. It was an incredibly tight fourth quarter.

Nassy, All-State first teamer Avery Fuller (team high nine points) and point guard Shea Hansen are just a few of the keys for Milford. All three earned post season honors.

“We know Derryfield will be coming hard at us,” Spartans coach Mike Davidson said, “but we’ve met every challenge that has come our way, and I expect we’ll be ready.”

Derryfield is led by All-Staters Tia Ferdinando and Anna Fazelat; Ferdinando fouled out late in that game while Erin Laflamme led the Cougars with 11. Derryfield had a crucial five second call late.

“We’ve got to learn, right?,” Derryfeld coach Courtney Cheetham said after the game. “The ones we’ve got to win are in the playoffs, so we’ve got to learn from these and move on.”

They have, right into a semifinal rematch that should be a classic. The winner takes on either Laconia or Oyster River in the finals Saturday at noon at UNH.

DIVISION I HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERTIN VS. EXETER

The Cards are the hottest team in any tourney, having won 12 straight. They cruised vs. Exeter 7-3 in a game at Skate 3 on Jan. 25 but then had a much closer 2-1 contest vs. the Blue Hawks at Phillips Exeter a month later. In that tight game, the Cards got goals by two of their best players, Noah Cordiero and James Mantone, Cordiero’s proving to be the game winner six minutes into the third period. Joe Crowe scored for Exeter.

The key for BG has been its depth, with tons of players involved in the scoring. But even more important, the

Cards have been able to rotate goalies Luke Bettencourt and Conor Hayes seamlessly. Bettencourt got the 6-0 shutout of Bow in this past Saturday’s quarterfinals.

So who gets the nod in this one?

“We’ll see,” Cards head coach Gary Bishop said with a chuckle. “It all depends on practice.”

Exeter goalie Trent Fujitani had 24 saves in the last meeting. Logan Dixon saved 35 in the January game in which BG had six different goal scorers, led by Jordan O’Hearn’s two.

The winner will face either No. 1 Concord or No. 5 Hanover, two longtime rivals who meet in the 5 p.m. semi, on Saturday at SNHU Arena in Manchester, time tba.

DIVISION II HOCKEY

MERRIMACK-HB-DERRYFIELD VS. SPAULDING

In the Jan. 11 game at Manchester’s West Side Arena between the two, the WarHawks had James Brew in goal while Spaulding’s Ryan Dube had two goals and Tyler Jean had two assists.

The Red Raiders are looking to get back to the finals after falling to Oyster River 3-0 in last year’s title game. The Bobcats are playing St. Thomas in the second semi at 7:30.

Remember, this is the first year of the co-op between Merrimack and what was Hollis Brookline-Derryfield,the latter in Division III. There are some Merrimack players who were on the team that lost to Dover 4-2 in the finals two years ago.

Spaulding’s three losses were to the other semifinalists plus Goffstown, whom Merrimack eliminated in overtime in the quarters. It’s wide open.
