If you want to know who dominates local high school golf, head to Amherst where the Souhegan High School golf team resides.
The Sabers enjoyed a threepeat of sorts on Tuesday at Windham Country Club, winning the Division II state championship. Yes, it’s their third straight state title, but the first two were captured when they resided for just two seasons in Division III.
They made the move back up this year to Division II, which had been their longtime home, and had a 20-6 record, seeded fifth out of eight teams that qualified. Didn’t matter.
“Having made the move back to Division II proved to be a daunting challenge for our athletes,” Sabers coach Norm Gagnon said. “But their dedication to the game and each other has shown through.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the team.”
Souhegan ended up with a plus-46 team total of 406, four shots better than second place (and top seed) Winnacunnet (410), while Portsmouth was a distant third at 59 over par (419).
The key for the Sabers was they had five golfers in the top 16, and all five qualified for Saturday’s NHIAA Division II individual final round at Concord’s Beaver Meadow.
Joe Mayo led the Sabers with a two-over 74, tied for first overall with Portsmouth’s Grey Gagnon.
But the Sabers depth proved too much for the field. Sean Zerega shot a six-over 78, tied for fifth with Portsmouth’s Turner Leduc. But then three straight Sabers were together as Souhegan’s Jake Wilson was 13th with an 84, Matt Nowak and teammate Patrick Bryson were tied for 14th at 85.
Souhegan was the only local team competing as a team in Division II. Individual-wise Hollis Brookline’s Matthew Howie shot an 87, tied for 20th, and Milford’s Jack Bastarache was tied for 46th at 96 and Alvirne’s Alex Small was tied for 48th with a 97.
But the Sabers stole the show.
“It was freezing this morning, and the course had a lot of leaves from the rain,” Milford coach Bill Soubosky said. “I commend them. What they did isn’t easy.”
BEDFORD TAKES DIVISION I
The Bulldogs cruised at Canterbury Woods with a plus-35, 19 shots ahead of second place Dover and 20 up on third place Londonderry.
Keene’s Taylor Miller was the medalist with a three-over 75. There were no local teams competing, and no one from the area qualified for the individual tourney. Bishop Guertin’s Joe Hebert shot a 12 over 84 to lead all locals, in a logjam while teammate Owen Murphy had an 85.
Merrimack’s Jackson Woods shot an 86, as did fellow Tomahawk Blake Beaulieu, while North’s Conor Prunier had an 87 as did Nashua South’s Noah Soule.
