Rain Gain: Cards ignore conditions to blank Alvirne 7-0

NASHUA – Sometimes rain can be the great equalizer, but that wasn’t the case Saturday afternoon at Stellos Stadium as title contender Bishop Guertin blanked the rebuilding Alvirne High School girls soccer team 7-0 at Stellos Stadium.
In the steady rain, the Cards, true, did only lead 2-0 at the half, but pumped in five goals in the second half. The game was one-sided all afternoon with the Broncos barely threatening in the 6-1 BG end. Guertin has won six straight.
BG coach Chris Millett didn’t know what to expect in the conditions, but the fact it was on the Motta Field turf may have helped BG.
“The ball was running really, really fast in warmpus,” Millett said. “With a 10-yard pass, it was like, ‘Oh shoot, this might run a little faster than we’re used to.”
So the Cards settled for an Ava Suech goal at 15 minutes in and an Emerson Brown goal off a corner kick at 26:34 for a 2-0 lead at halftime. But BG was able to win just about every 50-50 chance to make life tough for Alvirne keeper Ashtyn Willard (10 saves) and defenders such as Samantha Da Silva, Kayda Chan and Ava Tardif, among others, who valiantly tried to hold their own.
“They have good ball skills,” Broncos coach Kevin Brassard said of the Cardinals after his team fell to 0-6-1. “BG’s got good ball skills, they’re fast, a very very good team. I was really happy with our shape today. I don’t think the scores reflect as we are as a team.”
That’s because it was just a 2-0 lead at halftime.
But that changed as the Cardinals just wore Alvirne down. Suech got her second goal, and others were by Kelsey Ackerman, Kareena Sondhi, Zoe Horton-Sousa and Caroline Goulet.
“We talked at halftime when we went into the locker room at halftime,” Millett said, “that maybe we take a little more off of the ball to slow it down even more, and I think it made a world of difference in our success.”
While the Broncos are rebuilding, BG is full speed ahead, suffering a 2-0 loss at powerful Exeter in their opener nearly a month ago, but unbeaten – and unscored upon – since.
“I’m so proud of the girls with the focus and determination they’ve put in since we were knocked off in that first game,” Millett said. “We’ve been working to play more calmly and possess the ball more cleanly.”
Hard to do in the rain, but yesterday the Cards pulled it off.
