HS Roundup: BG’s Giardina captures North Invitational

It wasn’t exactly great running weather with the warm temperatures on Saturday, but the Bishop Guertin High School boys and the Nashua North girls cross country teams didn’t let that bother them.

They were both the top local finishing teams in the annual Nashua North Invitational at Mines Falls Park.

North (166) finished sixth in the girls meet, which was one by Pinkerton (61), ahead of U-32 (80) and Londonderry (129).

Alvirne was right behind North at 176 in seventh, ahead of eighth place Merrimack (183). Hollis Brookline was 13th and Nashua South 14th.

In the boys race, Bishop Guertin, led by overall winner Matt Giardina, took third at 108, while Pinkerton was first (69), ahead of second place Salem (85).

Locally, Nashua South was fifth at 136, while Alvirne (eighth, 222), Milford (ninth, 256), Merrimack (10th, 286), North (13, 297) and Hollis Brookline was 15th.

BOYS RACE

Giardina took top honors in 15:45.8, and teammates Carson Fischer (sixth, 16:41.6) and Ethan Fischer (seventh, 16:42.1) also led the way. Sam Prescott was 22nd

Milford’s Logan Korthals was eighth in 16:42.8 while Daniel Byrne was the other local in the top 10, taking ninth in 16:48.9, and the Panthers’ Ryan DuVarney was 19th in 17:13.1. Camdon Brien was 24thand fellow Panther Andrew Byrne was 35th. Rounding out the top 30 was Milford’s Will Whitney (28, 17:40.2).

North’s top runner was Owen Gagnon in 42nd. Alvirne’s Jacob Plante was 43rd , with fellow Bronco Ashton Rowe 48th . Merrimack’s Nathaniel Bergen was 44th.

GIRLS RACE

BG’s Anna Fondakowski (19:48.4) and North’s Lauren White (20:03.5) were third-fourth. Merrimack’s Melanie Bedard (eighth, 20:23.9) and Alvirne’s Anna Simpson (10th, 20:30.1) rounded out the top 10 locally.

In taking third, Guertin was helped by Anna Sinclair (23, 22.03.9) and Lyla Masson (29, 22:15.5). North’s Rosalie Neveu was 13th (20:57.9) and Charlotte Wilson was 32nd (22:28.9).

Other notables were Alvirne’s Ava Martin (16, 21:19.5), Jaylyn Paul of Milford (17, 21:23.3), and Hollis Brookline’s Mae Butler (24, 22:05.0) plus Merrimack’s Megan McWhirter (22:07.3). Kiera Fischer led South (70).

GIRLS SOCCER

MILFORD 3, KEENE 1

Lexi Bausha, Clair Cote and Kinsley Matsis all scored for the Spartans, Matsis on a penalty kick. Bausha and Cote each had an assist while Trinity Millner had five saves.

GIRL VOLLEYBALL

SOUHEGAN 3, PELHAM 0

The Sabers enjoyed a 26-18, 25-14, 25-16 sweep and were paced by Julia Colantuoni with 11 kills, four aces and five digs, while Alicia Kennedy had six kills and six digs. Addy Corcoran had five kills while Reagan Pepin had nine aces.
