LITCHFIELD – The numbers the Campbell High School football team compiled on Saturday against Sanborn were eye-popping.

Not all of that was a good thing.

Still, the Cougars were able to rumble for almost four hundred yards on the ground and dominated the Indians up front for most of the day on the way to a 43-12 win in a Division III East Conference contest.

Scott Hershberger ran for 131 yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while twin brother Nick Hershberger added 47 yards and two scores on the ground. Campbell (2-0) piled up 429 yards of offense, with 371 of that coming in the first half as the Cougars led 36-0 at the break.

But Campbell was also called for nine penalties for 85 yards and lost two fumbles.

“I’m sure it looks good statistically, but it wasn’t the cleanest,” Campbell coach Glen Costello said. “I felt in control with both pieces of it. I felt like we were able to do what we wanted offensively. We were in good position defensively. But then I felt like we were in control of how long it lasted because of the mistakes. It was one of those self-inflicted things.”

Brayden White added 83 yards rushing and a touchdown on just two carries before he left with what appeared to be a leg injury. Jake Landry also had a rushing touchdown and Michael Grace connected with Nicholas Mackey for a 27-yard touchdown.

The Cougars needed just four plays to score two touchdowns, but came up short on the two-point conversions to lead 12-0 just 1:24 into the game.

“Campbell is a very well-coached, physically strong team,” Sanborn coach Josh White said. “I was super proud our guys were able to stay positive in a tough game. Our big thing was we’re not giving up on ourselves and we’re not giving up on each other.”

The Indians (0-2), who graduated more than a dozen seniors from a team that made the playoffs in Division II last year, were able to move the ball at times, but couldn’t finish a drive until the second half.

Breyden Sanchez led Sanborn with 65 yards on seven carries and caught six passes for 147 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown reception from Brandon Sarette in the third quarter. Sarette finished 8 of 18 for 155 yards and the touchdown.

The Indians lost three fumbles in the first half and turned the ball over on downs three times, negating many of Campbell’s miscues.

“Sanborn is rebuilding and they’re well-coached, but we could get away with those mistakes,” Costello said. “It was hotter than I think anyone expected. We did a good job fighting through that. We’re thin at the varsity level, so a lot of our kids are playing a lot of snaps.”

That includes the Hershbergers, who came up with several big plays on the ground, including Scott Hershberger’s 57-yard touchdown run that made it 36-0 with 8:53 remaining in the second quarter.

“Somehow they keep on working hard and getting better,” Costello said. “Braydon White is probably one of the better players in the division, but he went down early with an injury.

“Jake Landry and Brody (Pinciaro) stepped up. Jake is a first-year kid for us and a lacrosse player who came out for us. Brody is a freshman with a bright future for us.”
