Here’s a capsule look at this weekend’s local games:
FRIDAY
DIVISION I
EXETER (1-0) AT NASHUA NORTH (0-1)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Bedford 35, Nashua North 3; Exeter 42, Dover 12.
LAST YEAR: Exeter 31, North 7.
FYI: The Blue Hawks have a stud running back in Daniel Batstone, who had over 165 yards and five touchdowns. The Titans need to get their offense in gear, but also need to get the ball as Exeter just plows ahead. North has John Canaway at QB and Darius Smith as a key back, and they held the ball for over nine minutes to start last week’s game. Can they beat Exeter at its own game?
THE PICK: Exeter 28, North 14. Titans get some scoring but Blue Hawks wear them down.
BISHOP GUERTIN (0-1) at GOFFSTOWN (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Goffstown HS
LAST WEEK: Nashua South 21, BG 15 (OT); Concord 17, Goffstown 14.
LAST YEAR: BG 35, Goffstown 20.
FYI: Both teams lost heartbreakers last week. The Grizzlies fell on a late field goal, but have a good back in William Schmid and QB Jayden Pares. Guertin used three QBs last week but Nate Bowen appeared to be the one the Cards used in crunch time; you can be back A.J. Holmes will get his share of carries. Can BG put together ground and pound drives again? We’ll see.
THE PICK: Guertin 21, Goffstown 17. Cards play keep away and have three long scoring drives for their first win.
SALEM (0-1) at ALVIRNE (1-0)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Alvirne HS
LAST WEEK: Alvirne 35, Manchester Central 14; Londonderry 30, Salem 7.
LAST YEAR: Salem 21, Alvirne 10.
FYI: Alvirne did it again, a road win in Manchester to start the season. Charlie Crawford gives them a steady leader at quarterback. But don’t be fooled by last week’s Blue Devils score, they have 10 starters back each on both sides of the ball, including senior running backs Kevin Todisco, Talen Walton and Felix Gonzalez.
THE PICK: Alvirne 21, Salem 17
Broncos looking pretty special.
MERRIMACK at TIMBERLANE WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Timberlane HS in Plaistow
LAST WEEK: Hingham (Mass.) 42, Merrimack 0; Windham 53, Timberlane 7.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: Merrimack is looking to bounce back from a tough loss that won’t hurt the Hawks’ in the standings. Timberlane has had it a little hard since returnng to Division I after winning the Division II title three years ago. There are just three starters back on offense; keep an eye on senior back Liam Kelley and QB Jeemy Mlocek.
THE PICK: Merrimack 28, Timberlane 7. ‘Hawks get that first win.
DIVISION II
HOLLIS BROOKLINE (0-1) at MANCHESTER WEST (1-0)
WHEN: 6:30 p.m.
WHERE: West High School, Manchester.
LAST WEEK: West 43, Pembroke 0; Kingswood 40, Hollis Brookline 0
LAST YEAR: West 14, HB 13.
FYI: While the Cavs are in rebuild mode, the Blue Knights are full steam ahead, with eight offensive starters back and seven on the defensive side with talented skill players Logan Paradis and KeShawn Foster on both sides of the ball.
THE PICK: West 35, HB 7. Cavs get on the board but West still best.
CONVAL (0-1) at SOUHEGAN (1-0)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Souhegan High School
LAST WEEK: Souhegan 37, St. Thomas 14; ConVal 20, Kennett 14.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The Sabers just keep that offense coming every year, don’t they? You think they’re going to have to find ways to score and QB Michael Fiengo gets three TDs, two passing and one rushing last week, and Ryland Raudelunas runs for two. ConVal moved up from Division III , returning six on offense, seven on defense and are led by senior back Elliot Featherstone.
THE PICK: Souhegan 40, ConVal 21. Sabers offense continues to rule at home.
HANOVER (0-1) at MILFORD (0-1)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Milford High School.
LAST WEEK: Plymouth 55, Milford 0; Trinity 27, Hanover 21
LAST YEAR: Hanover 35, Milford 6
FYI: These two teams opened up against the two who potentially could square off in the Division II finals. The Spartans had a tough day in Max Morelli’s coaching debut at Plymouth. This week, in their home opener, the Spartans will have to find a way to stop the Bears’ senior back David Frechette, who rushed for 255 yards in the loss at home.
THE PICK: Hanover 35, Milford 7. Another tough matchup for the rebuilding Spartans.
SATURDAY
DIVISION I
KEENE (1-0) at NASHUA SOUTH (1-0)
WHEN: 2 p.m.
WHERE: Stellos Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Keene 42, Spaulding 7; Nashua South 21, Bishop Guertion 15 (OT)
LAST YEAR: Keene 42, South 0
FYI: This could be a fabulous game in which conditioning plays a role as it will be a steamer on the Stellos turf. These ‘Birds are for real, 42 points in the first two quarters last week; backs Sawyer Lepple and Aiden Ioannou are keys but QB Kasen Abbott is also a threat. As for South, Cody Jackson got the passing game going, but watch for the speed of Justin Fish.
THE PICK: South 28, Keene 26. Panthers survive another close one.
DIVISION III
SANBORN (0-1) at CAMPBELL (1-0)
WHEN: 11 a.m.
WHERE: Campbell High School.
LAST WEEK: Gilford 41, Sanborn 2; Campbell 28, Laconia 7.
LAST YEAR: Did not play.
FYI: The didn’t put up a plethora of points last week, but they didn’t have to because Scott Hershberger picked up where he left off last season with two long TD runs and Nick Hershberger also got his carries and blocked for his brother. Sanborn dropped down from Division II, and judging from last week, you can see why.
THE PICK: Campbell 42, Sanborn 0. No offense to the visitors, who are clearly rebuilding, but this one may reach running time (35 point differential in second half.)
