HS Roundup: Good day for Merrimack skaters, tough for Nashua

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 15, 2024

With the temperatures and the whipping wind bringing back the winter chill, it was only fitting that the sport of the day Wednesday for local high schools was hockey.

The Nashua co-op teams did not have things go their way, while everything seems to be going Merrimack’s way these days.

Here’s the frozen rundown:

BOYS HOCKEY

HANOVER 5, NASHUA NORTH-SOUHEGAN 4

The Saber-Titans suffered a tough loss in their battle to grab a tournament spot, falling to 6-8 at Hanover.

Jacob Landry had a pair of goals, while Chase McBride and Jake Dodge added single scores. North-Souhegan was shorthanded with penalties for much of the second period.

The Saber-Titans host Goffstown on Friday at 3 p.m.

BOW 3, NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 1

The Kings (2-13) managed just eight shots on goal at Conway Arena, getting a third period score by Brian Keefe, assisted by Ryan Arnesen.

Bill Smethurst had two goals for the visitors. Kings goalie Riley Pelletier was outstanding in goal with 20 stops.

The Kings are off until their rematch with North-Souhegan on Monday.

MERRIMACK 3, LEBANON-STEVENS-MASCOMA 1

This could be the Tomahawks’ year as they captured their eighth straight to improve to 13-2. Merrimack got two goals and an assist from Conor Dunn, plus a goal by Eliot Medlock. Joe Raymond and goalie James Brew also had assists.

The Tomahawks host Goffstown on Saturday at West Side Arena.

ALVIRNE-MILFORD 2, GOFFSTOWN 2

Speaking of the Grizzlies, the Admirals kept their unbeaten streak going at four games to move to 8-6-2.

The Admirals will host Somersworth/Coe-Brown on Saturday, while Goffstown comes to Conway Arena to face Nashua North-Souhegan on Friday.
