Nashua High School South boys track coach Doug Booth said his team could finish anywhere in the top three, and he was right.

The Panthers took third in Saturday’s Division I boys championships at Plymouth State University, finishing with 46 points – just edging Winnacunnet (fourth, 45).

“All year long we talked about staying locked in and focused on each event we are competing in,” Booth said. “They have worked hard all season and the result is the third place finish. … I’m very proud of the Nashua South boys.”

As somewhat expected, Pinkerton flexed its muscles with 111 points for the title, followed by Bedford (72). Bishop Guertin was fifth with 28.

The Nashua North girls, with a big relay win, were the top local girls team in Division I with 43 points. Bedford captured the title (74), while Exeter (54) beat out Pinkerton (52) for second.

Also locally, Nashua South (27) was sixth, while Merrimack (20) was eighth, Alvirne (16) ninth and Bishop Guertin 14th.

In the boys Division II, Souhegan was third with 43 points, just 11 behind meet winner Coe-Brown, which squeaked past John Stark, 54-52. Milford, with two state champion relay teams, was sixth with 24 points while Hollis Brookline was ninth (20).

In the girls meet dominated by Oyster River (100 points), Milford was 13th while Hollis Brookline was 16th.

Here’s how it all happened:

South finished behind Winnacunnet in the final event, the 4×200, but that second place finish was enough to give them third overall for the meet, the team of Michael Menezes, Ryan Jansen, Marcell Perry and Ethan Schnyer running in 1:34.23.

“I told them before the race, ‘Relays win championships,'” Booth said. “‘Race as though this is your last race ever.'”

The Panthers got valuable points early on in the high jump with Ethan Schnyer taking second (6-0) and Barion Perry third (6-0). South’s Elyza Mercado was fourth at 46-4.25. Schnyer was fourth in the 300 in 36.53 seconds.
