HOLLIS — After only scoring 39 points in their double-digit loss to Merrimack Valley, the Hollis Brookline Cavaliers needed an offensive spark to get the team back on track in their four-game homestand.

Enter freshman James Arthur and sophomore Alton Williams.

After a low scoring first half, Arthur caught fire, nailing four three pointers in the second half-including the game tying shot to force overtime and the game-winning shot in the extra period, giving Hollis Brookline a 62-56 win over the Milford Spartans. He finished with 17 points.

“Games like this just are a testament to the work that he puts in,” said Hollis Brookline first-year head coach Ryan Kelley, his team now 3-4 in Division II. “Quite frankly, it was him having the guts to shoot it. As a freshman, that can be hard, but he puts the work in and was willing to take those shots.”

Complementing the perimeter shooting was Williams, whose play in the paint on both ends of the floor kept the Cavaliers within striking distance. Williams finished with a double-double performance, including 16 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.

“We have to be able to protect the ball and not lose some key turnovers,” said Milford head coach Don Gutterson. “We can’t give up those shots and have to block down the stretch because they got a couple of second chances.”

Despite the low-scoring affair on both fronts and a 19-17 HB lead in the first half, the Spartans (2-4) generated offense with a game-high 24 points from sophomore Kai LauQuan and 19 points from senior Will White.

The Spartans lunged for the lead in the third quarter with a 7-2 run, but entered the fourth down 38-33 after the perimeter shooting from the Cavaliers’ Arthur caught fire. Locking in, the Spartans battled back with a Lau Quan trey, eclipsing the deficit to 46-45 and two consecutive scores from White to give the Spartans a 49-46 lead.

Calling for the ball in the corner, it was Arthur again who swished a corner 3-pointer to force overtime and outlast the Spartans. Williams and Arthur combined for 8 of the Cavaliers 13 points in overtime, with a LauQuan foul in the extra period forcing the guard out of the game.

“I had no idea that we were going to have that [fight] this season,” said Kelley. “What I’m really happy about is the foundation of this response.”

After the win in their home court, the Cavaliers don’t have to wait long for their next opponent, squaring up against Pembroke this Friday at 6:30 p.m. Milford, meanwhile, visits Bow.
