HUDSON – Large crowd, festive atmoshphere, Friday had all the makings for a big night at Alvirne High School for the Bronco football team’s home opener.
It was a big night, but for the visiting Windham Jaguars, who rode their big back Tiger An and took advantage of a several Bronco miscues en route to a 49-14 win.
Things for Alvirne, which two weeks ago beat Manchester Central by 38 points, snowballed.
“It seemed to pile up, Alvirne coach Matt Lee said. “The first drive we were in it, competing, and all of a sudden just one play here or there. It was a 0-0 game and suddenly I look up and it was 28-0. It happened really fast.”
There was nothing fast about Windham’s first drive, as they marched 84 yards in 14 plays with An rumbling in from 3 yards out for the game’s first score. The drive chewed up nearly six minutes.
The irony was that the Jags’ next three scoring drives took just two plays each as they led 28-7 after one quarter. It was 42-7 at halftime, An scoring from 1 yard out with 47.7 seconds left to ensure that the second half would be played in running time. The senior finished with 130 yards on 28 carries and three TDs.
“It’s just a big statement for our team because Alvirne is getting better,” Windham coach Jack Byrne said. “It’s not going to be long before they’re pretty good. I think it says a lot about our guys to take a team that has improved so much and beat them by that much.
“It shows we’re playing well in all three phases of the game, we’re winning the turnover battle, we’re doing those little things that are really great.”
“An’s a good player, we knew it,” Lee said. “With the offense they run, you’ve got to kind of get them off-schedule a little bit. And we were actually doing all right, but couldn’t get that one play (for a stop).”
It had to be disappointing for the Broncos, who opened the season with a big win but have been outscored 100-20 since. They managed to get a score on Aiden Mills’ 79-yard TD run that brough the crowd to life with 5:32 left in the opening period. But Alvirne wouldn’t score again until a Mills 14 yard TD run with 5:29 left in the third period, the final score of the game. He rushed for 146 yards on the night, the Broncos lone highlight.
The wheels began to come off when the Broncos went for it on fourth-and-3 near midfield but an incompletion gave the Jags possession. Two plays later Windham quarterback Josh Sweeney raced 43 yards and Seamus Ross added the PAT to put Alvirne in a 14-0 hole.
Two turnovers later, it was a 28-0 hole. A fumble just outside the Bronco 20 was turned into a An 7-yard run. An interception then put The Jags on the Bronco 23 and Matt Desmarais hauled in a 21 yard TD pass and the Jags in the blink of an eye – three scores in a span of 2:15 – were in total command.
How bad of a night was it for Alvirne? After Mills scored, Bronco Shayne Mackey recovered a Jags fumble in Windham territory early in the second quarter. But no, a Bronco away from the play was called for a leg whip, and five plays later Sweeney hit a wide open Cameron Williams for a 22-yard score.
And, at some point in the first half, Bronco starting QB Charlie Crawford suffered a some type of shoulder injury and had to leave the game, done for the night and perhaps longer.
“This was similar to last week, we had a long Aiden Mills touchdown run and gave up 50 (to Pinkerton),” Lee said. “I’d like to play a close game, that’s for sure.
“I think they’re fairly self-motivated kids, they were ready for tonight. Windham’s really good. They’re just a good team.
“I think our kids were motivated and ready to play, just the better team won.”
