NASHUA – They took a very business-like approach on Tuesday, and that helped them, well, take care of business.

The Bishop Guertin High School girls soccer team took the first postseason step in its Division I title defense with a 4-0 prelminary round win over Londonderry at Stellos Stadium.

They scored early, basically on a Brooke Paquette shot that deflected off a Lancer defender into the net. From there, the outcome never seemed in doubt.

“I think we just picked up from that goal and made a good game,” Guertin coach Winston Haughton said. “All the girls did what we’ve been focusing to do.”

Katie Boudreau, in her final home game, got two goals with an assist to lead BG. But now it gets harder, as the focus for the No. 5, 14-2-1 Cards shifts to try to beat No. 4 Timberlane (15-2) in the quarterfinals on Friday in Plaistow. The Owls handed BG one of their two losses, 2-1, in the season’s fourth game, and beat local Nashua South 4-0 yesterday.

“It should be another good game, I’d imagine,” Haughton said. “They got two goals on us and held us off. So we’ll have to see what we can do in terms of protecting ourselves (defensively) and getting our offense going as we weren’t really offensively minded.”

But first the Cards had to do the job against the No. 12, now 7-10 Lancers.

Guertin took a 2-0 lead into intermission, as Boudreau fed Paquette on a cross and the senior converted at around the 17 minute mark, beating Lancer keeper Regan Delude. Nearly five minutes into the second half, Boudreau scored, assisted by Hailey Barker. Two minutes later, Paquette crossed it and Boudreau finished for a 4-0 advantage. Job completed, with keeper Ashlyn Guerrette playing just over half the game after she survived a Lancer push late in the first half.

“We got some nice goals, and finished our chances well,” Haughton said, “which is what we have to do to keep moving forward.”

“We made some adjustments,” Lancer coach Erin Dallas said. “But at the end of the day BG had a lot of pressure. The girls did their trying to respond to it. At the end of the day, someone had to win, and someone had to lose.”

BG hopes it’s not the latter for them Friday, as they lose home field advantage and will have to play on a grass field in Plaistow that isn’t in the best of shape.

“That’ll give them an advantage in that respect,” Haughton said. “They’ll have that home advantage, they’re used to it. But we do play on grass every now on then so we’ll be ready as well.”

When it’s tourney time, the business of business never ends.
