Welcome to Week 2 of the local high school football season. We had the appetizer with BG-Exeter Thursday night, and now a full Friday slate with the biggie being Nashua South hosting Merrimack at Stellos.
We’ll know more about each local after tonight, one would think. Here’s what we know now:
TONIGHT
DIVISION I
MERRIMACK (1-0) at NASHUA SOUTH (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 6:30 p.m. at Stellos Stadium.
LAST WEEK: Merrimack 35, Goffstown 0; Bedford 48, Nashua South 14.
LAST YEAR: Nashua South 51, Merrimack 16.
FYI: It would be a shock if that above score repeats itself. The Tomahawks and QB Maverick Torres seemed to be in mid-season form, while South’s turnover-plagued offense will need to improve. CJ Goss and Luke Craven both saw QB time while Merrimack will focus on stopping Justin Fish (60 yards receiving, 20 rushing). Of course, the two teams played a wide level of opponents last week.
Also, the Panthers are honoring the memory of longtime former assistant coach Colin Scoggins, who retired a few years ago but passed away this past summer after a lengthy illness. Scoggins also made contributions to the defense efforts on 9-11.
THE PICK: Merrimack 21, South 19. The Panthers always bounce back as the two teams battle it out, could go either way.
NASHUA NORTH (0-1) at KEENE (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 6:30 p.m., Keene’s Alumni Field.
LAST WEEK: BG 42, North 7; Alvirne 16, Keene 6.
LAST YEAR: North 41, Keene 7
FYI: Both teams turned the ball over in losses, Mason Ward gettng Keene’s only score while senior QB Brody O’Connor was the strength of North’s offense. The ‘Birds have home field and for young North it’s those freshmen and sophomores first trip.
THE PICK: North 18, Keene 14. Tough call, but we like O’Connor’s ability to do the job.
CONCORD (1-0) at ALVIRNE (1-0
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. at Alvirne HS.
LAST WEEK: Alvirne 16, Keene 6; Windham 31, Concord 28.
LAST YEAR: Concord 41, Alvirne 7
FYI: The Broncos have a good player in QB Cam St. Clair, who ran for 72 yards and a score plus threw for 52. Chase Noone did the job on defense as Alvirne was in attack mode. Concord is tough, the Tide came back on Windham. Watch for Tide back Colin Savard (two TDs) and junior QB Rhys Craigue.
THE PICK: Concord 28, Alvirne 21. The Tide’s comeback vs. Windham shows something, but again, mistakes could change all that for Alvirne.
DIVISION II
HANOVER (1-0) at MILFORD (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. at MHS.
LAST WEEK: Plymouth 18, Hanover 11; Milford 30, Pembroke 6.
LAST YEAR: Hanover 35, Milford 0
FYI: A true test for the Spartans, who got good games last week from Jacob Hill and sophomore QB Wes Martin.
Beward in a close game of Hanover kicker Dima Petrov; he booted a 40-yarder in the loss to Plymouth and is said to have 50-yard range. Jack Richardson is a defensive force for the Bears (nine tackles, two sacks last week.
THE PICK: Milford 20, Hanover 19. Upset special. Spartans can play rough and tumble ball.
CONVAL (1-0) at SOUHEGAN (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. at SHS Calvetti Field in Amherst.
LAST WEEK: ConVal 33, St. Thomas 31; Souhegan 41, Bow 7.
LAST YEAR: Souhegan 35, ConVal 0
FYI: The names have changed for the Sabers but the results are the same, with Luke Fallon running the show at QB and backs like Jacob Bryan and Owen Mobley putting up the yards and points. ConVal obviously can score but also will give up points, and you can’t do that vs. the Sabers. But on the flip side, the Cougars have back Wetu Selby, who ran for a school record 228 yards and five TDs last week. Could be interesting.
THE PICK: Souhegan 42, ConVal 24. Sabers will score often, but the Cougars get their points too.
HOLLIS BROOKLINE (0-1) at MANCHESTER WEST (1-0)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. at Manchester West’s Meisel Turf Field.
LAST WEEK: West 9, Kennett 6 (OT); Merrimack Valley 50, HB 21.
LAST YEAR: West 37, HB 0.
FYI: This could be competitive. West needed overtime to beat Kennett but the Blue Knights defensively did the job, stopping the Eagles on the 1 in OT and also on special teams, with a blocked PAT and of course a game winning kick. HB has the skill players to score in QB Stevie Niebel and receivers like Cole Duncan and Thurston Balmer. Game will be won in the trenches.
THE PICK: West 20, HB 14. Better game for the Cavs but more steps to take.
DIVISION III
CAMPBELL (0-1) at LEBANON (0-1)
WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. at Lebanon HS.
LAST WEEK: Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough 33, Campbell 22; Epping-Newmarket 34, Lebanon 14.
LAST YEAR: Campbell 24, Lebanon 16
FYI: The Cougars were supposed to go to a college football game tonight (BC?), instead they’re on a bus headed up near the Vermont border before the foliage sets in thanks to the revamped Divison III schedule. Their run oriented offense led by Brody Pinciaro can work, but they can’t fall behind by too much. The Cougars are vulnerable to the pass with a young secondary; Lebanon QB Mason Jordan did have a TD pass last week.
THE PICK: Campell 20, Lebanon 12. Cougars have a fun bus ride home.
