HOLLIS — A week after winning their closest game of the season, the Souhegan Sabers returned to dominate form against the Hollis-Brookline Cavaliers. Scoring on their first six drives of the game, the Sabers routed the rebuilding Cavs 49-0 to keep their undefeated season alive and remain in first place in Division II’s West Conference.

The Sabers did the majority of their scoring in the first quarter, finding the end zone four times. Lead running back J.J. Bright put the Sabers on the board with a 54-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game.

After a mishandled punt from HB, Souhegan (7-0) started its next drive on the Cavalier two-yard line. On their second play of the drive running back Danny Sullivan took a pitch on the outside and walked into the endzone, extending the lead to 14-0.

The early lead allowed head coach Robin Bowkett to give the majority of the carries to Sullivan who made the most of the opportunity, rushing for 29 yards on nine carries.

“He played great both sides of the ball,” said Bowkett of the senior. “He’s done everything we’ve ever asked of him for four years.”

Quarterback Romy Jain didn’t pass too often on the night but when he did, he made it count. On Souhegan’s next drive, he launched a deep pass that found Cole Manning for a 52-yard touchdown.

Bright finished the quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run to put the team up 28-0. On only three carries on the night, Bright finished with 64 rushing yards.

In the second quarter, Souhegan began to rotate fresh legs into the game. Running back Carson Behn found the end zone twice, first on an eight-yard pass from Jain and the second on an 18-yard carry. Jain finished the night with 108 passing yards before sitting out the second half.

In the second half Michael Fiengo took over at quarterback for Jain. The freshman scored late in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard touchdown run off a run-option, making the score 49-0.

With it being the sixth game Souhegan has scored 40 or more points, Bowkett was more impressed with his defense holding off HB’s offense. The Cavaliers (1-6) mustered only three first downs on the night and had their one field goal attempt blocked.

“Hats off to our defense top to bottom,” he said. “I loved seeing the young guys score in the fourth quarter, but pitching a shutout is really hard to do.”

The win sets up Souhegan for a big match against Pelham next week with first place on the line between two undefeated teams, as the Pythons kept pace with a win over Milford last night. Bowkett expect his guys will have no issue preparing for the game.

“It’s going to be a title fight next week and it’s going to be awesome,” he said. “I imagine the kids will be locked and ready rock on our work days during the week.”
