HS Roundup: Alvirne-North football cancelled; Merrimack wins

It’s been a tough week at Alvirne High School with the tragedy involving the football program — Sunday’s gamve vs. North is now officially caneclled — but the Broncos could at least cheer a volleyball victory.

Here’s a look:

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

ALVIRNE-NORTH CANCELLED

Bronco head coach Tarek Rothe announced late Friday afternoon that Sunday’s rescheduled game vs. Nashua North has been officially cancelled — as in will not be played.

Rothe said the players on Friday voted not to play, and only 19 were present at practice. Alvirne has struggled all year at 0-5.

MERRIMACK 24, SPAULDING 12

East met West on Friday night with West, as in the Tomahawks coming out on top. That sets up a good one next Fridat in Merrimack with the ‘Hawks (4-1, 4-2 overall) taking on unbeaten Nashua North (5-0).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ALVIRNE 3, TIMBERLANE 0

The Broncos (5-8) end their four game skid with a sweep of the Owls. Playing well for Alvirne were Faith Sydoriak, Laurin Carbonneau and Jaelyn Green. Alvirne hosts Salem on Tuesday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3, WINNACUNNET 0

The Cavaliers (11-2) sweep the Warriors by the scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-18. Anneli DiVirgilio (nine aces), Kate Berrigan (five kills, five aces), Cheyenne Colbert (five kills), Sophie Jordan (17 assists) and Maggie Noble (eight digs) had contributions in HB’s win.

HB hosts Dover on Tuesday.

LONDONDERRY 3, NASHUA NORTH 1

The Titans (12-2) four game win streak comes to an end against the Lancers 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, 13-25. Playing well for North were Alyssa Stanton (13 kills, 12 digs, two aces), Kailyn Sung (18 digs, ace), Kelechi Okorie (six kill, three blocks, two digs), Ella Landry (six digs, four kills, two aces) and Mardy Novak (19 assists, five digs, kill).

North visits Exeter on Wednesday.

OYSTER RIVER 3, CAMPBELL 1

The Cougars (8-2) fall to Oyster River 25-23, 7-25, 17-25, 14-25. Natalie Cloutier (11 digs, seven kills, block), Madison Bruner (eight kills, two aces, block) and Alex Biron (10 assists, three digs) played well for the locals. Campbell hosts Manchester Central on October 13.

BOYS SOCCER

COE-BROWN 1, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 0

The Cavaliers (8-3-1) lose a tough battle on the road to a stout Coe-Brown squad. HB visits Souhegan on Monday.

MANCHESTER CENTRAL 3, MERRIMACK 1 (Thursday)

Merrimack scored first on a free kick from Quinn Giuliano, but Central tied it and got two quick second half goals to get the win.

Freshmen defenders B rody Towle, Isaiah Traverso, Giuliano and Nathan Johnson played well for the ‘Hawks.

GIRLS SOCCER

BEDFORD 3, NASHUA SOUTH 0

The Panthers (6-7) lose their fourth straight contest despite Izzy Mederos making 11 saves. South hosts Dover on Tuesday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 4, PELHAM 1

The Cavaliers improved to 10-1 after a dominant win against the Pythons. Molly Reardon, McKenna Maguire, Addison Fyfe and Lily Bouchard each found the back of the net. Mguire added two assists with Madeleine Boudreau and Rosalie DeSantis tallied one assist each. Cassidy Engle and Bailey Dunn (four saves) played great on the defensive end. HB visits Laconia on Tuesday.

ST. THOMAS 5, CAMPBELL 0

The Cougars record now sits at 7-4 after losing for the fourth game in a row. Campbell visits Stevens on Tuesday.

FIELD HOCKEY

TIMBERLANE 3, NASHUA NORTH 0

The Titans get shutout once again and drop their record to 0-14. North hosts Manchester Memorial on Saturday.

DOVER 3, NASHUA SOUTH 1

The Panthers (3-10) lost on the road Friday night at Dover. Krista Reid scored a goal and Kaitlyn Tello had 16 saves in net. South plays Bishop Guertin on Saturday.

WINDHAM 4, MERRIMACK 0

The Tomahawks (1-14) drop their 12th consecutive game when they got shutout by the Jaguars. Merrimack visits Salem on October 15.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 1, OYSTER RIVER 1 (OT)

Lindsey Dattis scored the Cavaliers (8-3-1) lone goal in their Friday afternoon match that ended in a tie. HB visits Goffstown on Thursday.
