NASHUA – The Rivier men’s soccer team hosted the Vikings of Salem St. on Wednesday evening at Joanne Merrill Field for an exciting non-conference match up. Although both teams saw good chances, only the Vikings were able to find the back of the net, taking the 1-0 win over the Raiders.
With the loss, the Raiders fell to 1-2-1, while the Vikings improved to 3-0-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Salem St. registered the first two chances in the opening 15 minutes of action, however, were unable to convert on either.
Senior Kyle Clairmont and sophomore Vincent Arsenov provided Rivier with its best opportunities but were turned away both times.
The Vikings broke the deadlock in the 36th minute off a free kick opportunity from way beyond the 18-yard box.
Both teams battled in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the score remained unchanged heading into the break.
Trailing by a goal entering the second half, the Raiders searched for an equalizer while limiting Salem St.’s opportunities.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Sades made three saves after the break to keep the deficit at one, and Rivier earned three corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
Despite the late push, the Raiders were unable to break through as the Vikings held on for the 1-0 victory.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Sades stopped seven total shots.
Salem St. outshot Rivier 17-5 (8-3 SOG).
The Vikings earned six corner kicks while the Raiders tallied four.
