CAVALIER CROWN, PART II: HB stuns Windham for boys volleyball title

NASHUA – Hollis Brookline High School knows plenty about volleyball dynasties … on the girls side.

Saturday evening here at North High School, the Cavalier boys delivered a lesson on denying one. Second-seeded HB took on unbeaten, defending state champion Windham High in the Division 1 state final and slayed the giant,3-1, ending the Jaguars’ win streak at 37 matches. In the process, the Cavs (17-2) hung their second banner in program history, the first coming in 2016.

“The first two times we played Windham – undefeated, state champs from last year – we went in there and made too many mistakes,” said Cavaliers coach Ed Leonard. “Tonight, it was all about composure.”

Beaten twice in three straight sets by Windham in the regular season, the Cavaliers had nothing to lose in the championship match, and they played like it with a 25-19, 26-24, 18-25, 25-22 win.

Free-swinging senior Jake Laborde, the recently-named Player of the Year in the state, led the way with 17 kills and a tone-setting opening first game.

“Our team is the more offensive team. We try to shy away from tipping. We try to hit balls hard. That’s what we did,” said the Endicott College-bound outside hitter.

“We made a total of 84 errors in the first two games against them, so our goal was to make our serves and to minimize our errors and we did that.”

Laborde’s serve crackled. His back-to-back aces sparked a first game, 25-19, win that left an indelible message for the night.

HB wasn’t here for the runner-up plaque.

“We know a lot of those guys out there. A lot of them play club with us,” said Laborde. “We knew what they do out there, and we knew we were the better team. We showed that.”

Cavalier toughness reigned supreme in Game 2.

The Cavs fell behind 9-4 early, took a lead mid-game, then saw Windham pull ahead, 24-22, with two shots to claim the game.

The Jags faltered on the first with an error, and Laborde took care of the rest, pounding three straight kills for the 26-24 HB victory.

Down 2-0, the champs laid out all they had in Game 3. Maybe the nerves of the moment finally got to HB, but Windham took care of business, 25-18.

But led by freshman setter Ethan Norris and junior John Sommer, Hollis Brookline went for the kill and got it, 25-22.

Chasing the Jags at 20-18, Aidan Norris halted the Jags run with a cross-court kill to put the ball in libero Dan Sattler’s hands at the service line. Sommer scored with a rejection and then a kill, helping to put HB ahead for good at 23-20.

Aidan Norris punctuated the victory with his eighth kill of the night, ending Windham’s night and season at 25-22.

“Really, it’s just a game of taking away their best weapons, which are their middles, and we did a pretty good job, then just staying composed and not making errors,” said Coach Leonard. “I told them act like you’ve been here, even though most of these guys are first-year and second-year players.

“We had a couple shaky matches during the season, and they’ve been there before. Today, they just kept their composure. They’re like a brotherhood. They keep each other calm. It’s a bond they have to stay calm, cool and collected.”

Hollis Brookline, which finishes at 17-2, got 17 kills and six aces from Laborde in his final match.

“He’s a second-year player, who has made huge improvement … just an incredible leader,” said Leonard. “When he stays composed, and our captains stay composed, it trickles down to the rest of the team.”

The Norris boys – whose older sister Maddie was one of the great volleyball winners in state history for HB – added 11 digs from Aidan and 36 assists from Ethan.

Sommer finished with four kills and four blocks, while Sattler pitched in 13 digs.
