NASHUA – Is it the new camo jerseys? Or just a simple case of hell hath no fury like a Cardinal scorned?

Either way, the Bishop Guertin High School baseball team is playing its best baseball at the perfect time, leading into the Division I tournament, as Tuesday night’s 10-0 win over city rival Nashua North at Holman Stadium showed.

“Ever we started wearing those camo jerseys we’re 4-0,” said Cards catcher Max Riordan, who went 3 for 3 with a double, homer and three RBIs. “We want to win. We want to get that six seed, five seed, as high as we can go. We just want to keep winning, we’re doing really well and just want to stay there.”

Flash back to a defensive disaster on, of all nights, Friday the 13th, as the Cards blew a lead thanks to miscues in the field and lost 6-5. While that woke up the Panthers in the first of their five straight, Guertin (12-7) hasn’t lost since, outscoring the opposition 48-10 in just four games.

“Our pitchers have been fantastic all year,” Cards coach Scott Painter said. “Our defense has shored up a lot. The guys are adjusting (at the plate). They’ve really worked hard paying attention to details, we’ve been aggressive on the basepaths.”

Last night was a tale of two teams. While Guertin is looking like a tough out, getting 11 hits, the Titans fell to 7-10 and will likely need to win their remaining two games – or at least one — at Spaulding today and at Windham on Friday, to have a chance to make the tournament. They managed just one hit, a Abimael Gonzalez single, off Guertin lefty starter Dom Monico over five and Cooper Granville in the sixth. The Cards got two in the sixth on a fielder’s choice/error to invoke the mercy rule.

“Hats off to their pitcher, he pitched well, he’s pitched well all year,” North coach Zach Harris said. “It’s a good team. They (the Titans) have to decide how they want to move forward. … Hopefully we’ll show up tomorrow, show up Friday and get some help.”

The lefty Monico struck out three and walked one and plunked a batter. With North threatening with two on and two out in the second, he caught Gonzalez looking and the Titans never really threatened again.

“Monico’s been fantastic,” Painter said. “Our pitchers have been great all year.”

But oh, those bats. Guertin got three hits and took advantage of a North error in the first off Titans starter Kenny Reel for a quick 3-0 lead, Riordan and Dante Mieto getting the ribbies.

Riordan doubled in a run in the third, and Kam Thibault tripled him home and scored on the same play on an errant throw for a 6-0 lead.

In the fourth, Brandon Metevier singled with two outs, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. Riordan smacked a solo homer in the fifth.

The Cards wrap things up tonight vs. Timberlane at Holman, but if this magic keeps happening, the rest of Division I can blame Concord, which ordered the camo jerseys for BG for a salute to service game the two played at Memorial Field a week ago.

The thanks they got? Guertin bludgeoned the Tide 15-3.

There you go.
