High School Notebook: Still more battles left for the Bridge

NASHUA – The Bridge may have already been won, but that doesn’t mean the Battle won’t go on.
Nashua High School South has a commanding 7-1 lead over Nashua North in the spring version of the annual Battle of the Bridge, and there are only four events left, so, at least unofficially, South has clinched the competition.
But this week there are still four events to be played/competed, starting with the North-South softball game on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Rivier University.
There is also North-South Unified Track at 3:30 p.m. at Nashua North on Thursday, and then on Saturday the Panther and Titan boys and girls track teams will compare scores in the annual North Invitational at the North Track Saturday, a multi-team affair that begins at 9 a.m.
South has wins in varsity boys and girls lacrosse, baseball and boys and girls tennis, plus JV Baseball and boys JV lacrosse. The Titans got a come-from-behind win Saturday in the freshman baseball game.
The North-South softball game will brighten up the season for one of the two struggling teams. They each play today, with the 1-7 Panthers visiting Londonderry and the 0-8 Titans at Winnacunnet. South had three games last week but North has been idle since last Monday.
BIG LACROSSE MATCHUPS
It’s a week for some big boys and girls lacrosse matchups. The Nashua South boys have won seven straight to stand at 9-1 but have three tough games beginning with today’s tussle at one of Division II’s better teams, Timberlane (8-1), and then a tough back-to-back stretch at Division I powers Exeter (Wednesday) and Bishop Guertin on Thursday (Stellos Stadium, but BG’s home game).
That South-BG game at 4 p.m. Thursday is the first game in in intriguing Stellos doubleheader, because the 6 p.m. game is the top game on the Division I schedule for the season as unbeaten Bedford (10-0) and Bishop Guertin (10-0-1). It’s a rematch of last year’s semifinals, which Guertin rallied to win 11-9 and go on to win the state title. First Bedford will try to keep its unblemished record in tact with a visit to another local, Merrimck on Wednesday
There is another big boys game today, a Division III battle of contenders in Laconia between local squad Campbell, now 8-0, and 7-1 Laconia at 6:30 p.m. Should be a dandy. All of these games should.
ANOTHER BIG BASEBALL MATCHUP FRIDAY
This past Friday’s North-South baseball game, won by the Panthers 1-0, was a classic. South will have another local test under the Holman Stadium lights this Friday when the Panthers tangle with rival Bishop Guertin at 7 p.m.
The Cards are 7-5 and have to worry about a road game at Keene today and a home game Wednesday night at title threat Pinkerton first.
South doesn’t have an easy week either; an apparent umpire shortage caused the Panthers to have to postpone their scheduled game last week at Spaulding until this Thursday. Before that they are at Londonderry Tuesday and at another local rival, Merrimack, on Wednesday. So four games in four days will make for an interesting pitching week for the Panthers.
Pick a game or two to go to and enjoy.
