HS Roundup: South soccer celebration continues; BG girls edge Panthers

It was a light schedule on the local front, in part due to the weather, but the day began with the Nashua High School South boys soccer team being presented with a resolution by New Hampshire State Senator Cindy Rosenwald in honor of the Panthers’ Division I title won last November in a dramatic shootout over Hanover.

The resolution reads “Be it known that the New Hampshire Senate extends its congratulations to the Nashua High School South Undefeated Boys Soccer Team in recognition of winning the 2021 NHIAA Division I championship 18-0-1.

“And be it further known that the New Hampshire Senate extends its heartfelt best wishes for continued success.”

The presentation was made in the South Rotunda.

Meanwhile, here’s a look at the day’s events and some good news for some HB girls lacrosse players as well:

GIRLS TENNIS

BISHOP GUERTIN 5, NASHUA SOUTH 4

The Cardinals prevailed in a continuation of a match that was halted by rain last week to improve to 2-5 on the year while the Panthers fell to 0-5.

The match came down to No. 2 doubles, won by Amelia de la Vega and Abbey Linske 8-5 to break the deadlock.

Guertin’s No. 3 doubles, Sofia Zelenski and Sophia Sears had triumphed 8-4 to even things at 4.

Before the rain came last week, the teams had split singles. South’s Maggie Wagner won at No.1, 8-6, and No. 2 Abby Finchum (8-3) and Samitha Nadella (7-3) also came out on top.

BG’s singles wins came from Alexa Psederidis at No. 3 (8-6), Linske at No. 4 (8-2) and De la Vega at No. 6 (8-3).

BG is off until it faces Londonderry on May 2 while South hosts Manchester Memorial today.

BOYS LACROSSE

LONDONDERRY 6, NASHUA SOUTH 5

The Panthers suffered their first loss despite two goals and an assist from Rhett Medling, plus single goals by Griffin Johnson, Nate Campbell, and Connor Rowsell.

Ethan Johnson had 12 saves in goal for the Panthers (2-1). Londonderry (2-2) was led by Josh Defranzo’s four goals.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

LONDONDERRY 3, BISHOP GUERTIN 0

The Cards are still seeking their first win 0-4) after a tough 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 sweep at the hands of the Lancers.

Trent Rider had five kills with 11 digs and two blocks for BG, while Sam Dufoe added eight assists and two aces.

Guertin hosts Manchester Memorial-Central on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Stellos Stadium.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

KEENE TOPS NASHUA NORTH, BG

The Blackbirds totaled 74 points, ahead of North (54) and the Cards (8).

North’s Jack Sullivan had a great day, taking the triple jump (40-4.5), the high jump (6-0) and was second in the long jump. Also for the Titans, Toby Brown won the shot put at 47-0 while Jack Washam (131-7) took the discus.

North also captured the 4×100 relay (only team competing).

Guertin got a second and a third from Sean O’Keefe and Josh Rivers in the 800.

Keene won the girls meet with 66 points, ahead of North (41) and BG (28)

Titan winners included Rosalinda Tavarez in the 100 (13.14), Jhanelle Thomas in the 200 (27.09) and 400 (1:01.11), Dantia Braccio on the 1600 (5:28.14), Maddie Novak with a clean throw sweep, winning the shot put (33-0) javelin (91-5), and discus (108-3).

Caroline Cairns won the 300 hurdles for Bishop Guertin (53.89) and the Cards also captured the 4×400 relay with Fiona Doherty, Cairns, Mary Kate Finn, and Sophia Cote in 4:37.55.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Three Cavs to play in Nationals

Three Hollis Brookline players – Alyssa Hill, Sabrina Hill and Ireland Stark – were selected following tryouts for limited spots to compete in a national tourney May 28-29 in Cedar Lane Regional Park in Bel Air, Md.

The tournament is held along with the NCAA Division I Tournament.
