The Rivier University women’s softball team gave it a good fight in Great Northeast Athletic Conference pod play this weekend.

They upset No. 1 Albertus Magnus 3-2 on Saturday, but evidently that just poked the Bear. Albertus fought its way after that through the losers bracket and beat the Raiders twice on Sunday, losing 8-4 and 13-1 to see an otherwise successful season/postseason end.

In the decisive game in New Haven, Conn., the Raiders were outhit 13-1 as Albertus broke open a close 1-1 game with two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and then breaking it wide open with seven in the seventh. Rivier committed four errors.

Hayley Rapaglia led the Raiders with two hits while Sophia Quinlan knocked in the Raiders’ lone run in the game with a single in the second scoring Olivia Couto to give Rivier a brief 1-0 lead. Hayleigh Silva took the loss for the Raiders (17-23), allowing six runs on nine hits over six innings, with four walks. Reilly Austin led Albertus with two hits and three RBIs.

In the opener, the Raiders never led, trailing 7-1 by the end of the fifth, even though they outhit Albertus 7-6. Seven Raiders got a hit apiece while Savannah Hansen led the Raiders with two RBIs, a two-run single in the sixth.

Taking the loss in the circle for Riv was Rapaglia, who gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits, but hurt herself with eight walks in four innings.
