Welcome back to the Division II boys basketball semifnals, Souhegan Sabers. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen you.

Nine years, in fact.

But the top seeded Sabers, by virtue of their rout of No. 8 Laconia on Friday night in Amherst, will be back in the semis for the first time since 2013.

That was the good tourney news locally Friday. The bad postseason news was that the Merrimack High School girls basketball season came to an end after a loss in the Division 1 quarterfinals in Derry to top seed Pinkerton Academy.

In regular season action, the high flying Campbell boys ended their Division III regular season with a win at St. Thomas of Dover, and will be one of the favorites in the upcoming tournament.

Meanwhile, the Cougar girls, who are on the bubble, lost a tough one to the Saints at home.

Here’s the rundown, all basketball:

DIVISION II BOYS

NO. 1 SOUHEGAN 67,

NO. 8 LACONIA 40

The Sabers went on a 22-0 run to end the third quarter and turn a close game into a rout, improving to 18-1.

Matt Canavan led the way with 27 points while John McBride had 12 to go along with 13 rebounds.

The Sachems (11-9) opened the second half with a 9-2 run but the Sabers just exploded for their game-deciding run, ending with a Canavan 3-pointer that made it 54-29 after three.

The Sabers will have a chance to avenge their only loss of the season when they take on No. 4, 17-3 Lebanon in the semifinals on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Oyster River High School. Lebanon handed the Sabers a 60-44 loss last month; last night the Raiders outlasted Pembroke 64-61.
