NASHUA — Even Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball coach John Fisher admitted he was looking ahead – kind-sorta.

A matchup that will bring back memories of last year’s Cardinal championship season takes place tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Nashua High School North’s Titans Gym: Fisher’s 5-3 Cardinals vs. Steve Lane’s 6-1 North Titans.

“They’re very talented,” Fisher said of the Titans after BG’s win over Windham on Saturday. “We’ve had this game circled. You try not to look ahead, but you can’t deny that Nashua North’s a talented, talented basketball team.”

The contest highlights another busy Monday night of high school hoop in the area, as Nashua South hosts the same Windham team Guertin throttled 68-55 on Saturday, with the Panthers (4-5) looking to snap a two-game skid.

Elsewhere, in boys hoop Milford is at Lebanon, Coe-Brown is at unbeaten (7-0) Souhegan and Merrimack (2-6) hopes to get back on the winning track at home vs. Winnacunnet.

In girls action, Bishop Guertin (6-1) conversely will host the North girls, who are 1-5, hoping to snap a five-game losing streak. Nashua South, still seeking its first win, is at Windham, while Merrimack is at Winnacunnet. Hollis Brookline hosts Timberlane, Milford hosts Lebanon and Campbell hosts Mascenic. Souhegan will venture to Coe-Brown.

But the banner game is North-BG boys, a rematch of last year’s preliminary round tourney tilt won by the Cardinals just a short time after they had lost a regular season game to the Titans, blowing a 10-point second half lead. Both games last year were also at North.

A lot has changed. Guertin is led by juniors Matt Santosuosso and Luke Anderson, among others, while the Titans have been paced by Trevor Labrecque and Thomas Laurendi, plus a host of other keys.

Ah, the gamesmanship. Fisher said of the Titans on Saturday, “They’re here today, watching us, so they’ll be ready. A couple of guys wanted to run a couple of plays and I said we’re not running ’em, because I don’t want North to see them. We need everything we have to beat them.”

The one thing missing, though, will be a more intense atmosphere due to the Nashua pandemic-related crowd restrictions. Two fans per each visiting team player on the roster and four per home team players are allowed. Also, there is no school Monday and Tuesday in Nashua due to COVID-related staff absences, but as of Sunday games were still on.

“It’s going to be a great game,” Fisher said. “I think both teams are ready for it. Last year, those two games. … the opportuntiy for a kid to play in a game like that is great stuff.”
