HS Roundup: Alvirne boys win again; local wrestlers do well

There’s no holiday time off for a lot of local high school teams, as Monday showed.
The Alvirne boys basketball team picked up a decisive win at home over Keene, and there was other action on the ice and several wrestlers competed in the prestigious George Bossi Lowell Wrestling Tournament, with two advancing to the quarterfinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL
ALVIRNE 62,
KEENE 35
The Broncos vaulted over the .500 mark (3-2) thanks to a great combination of offense (eight 3 pointers) and defense (single digits only for Keene in three of four quarters).
They got 17 points from Brendan Graham and 14 apiece from Eric Allard and Cam Kruger, and point guard Anthony Ferullo sparked the defensive effort.
The Broncos will host Bedford on Thursday.
OYSTER RIVER HOLIDAY TOURNEY

The Spartans got 23 points from Ryon Constable but it wasn’t enough in the first round of the Oyster River tourney.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
KEENE 58,
ALVIRNE 51
Katie O’Connor had 15 points and Paige McKinley added 10 but it wasn’t enough as the Broncos (3-2) saw their three-game winning streak snapped. They were outscored 16-7 in the third quarter after the game was tied at halftime.
Alvirne is at Pinkerton on Wednesday.
WRESTLING
LOCALS COMPETE AT LOWELL TOURNAMENT
The area has two wrestlers in the quarterfinals of the George Bossi Lowell Holiday Tournament.
Nashua South’s Anthony Fernandez won three matches to reach the quarterfinals at 132, one by fall, and two decisions of 6-2 and 12-2. Hollis Brookline’s Troy Moscatelli is also in the quarterfinals as he won two matches by fall and another by major decision (10-1)
In other highlights, for South,Ryan Salemi took two of three matches, recording two pins at 113; John Cullerton won two matches by fall at 120; Kyle Vancellette won two matches by fall but lost the third. Also picking up wins but eventually eliminated were Eddie Reyes, who won by fall and a 7-1 decision at 170 and Andrew Lovell won by fall twice at 182,and Jimmy Brown won by fall at 285 in 2:32. Alvirne’s Jacob Kulick at 126 recorded a pin at 3:27 and had two wins in five matches; Cameron Steed at 152 took one of three matches.
Also for HB, R.J.Mcadams picked up two wins at 145; Caden Brusso won twice at 113, Caleb Wilder took three matches at 120.
BOYS HOCKEY
SALEM 7,
NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 1
The Kings bowed on Day 1 of the three-day Tuscan Kitchen tourney at the Salem Icenter. Sean McCarthy scored their lone goal, unassisted. South-Pelham takes on Pinkerton this afternoon on the round-robin event’s second day.
