HS Roundup: South-Pelham skaters fall in opener; ‘Hawks wrestlers blank Broncos

The Nashua South-Pelham boys hockey team opened its regular season with a loss at Keene, but the Kings were indeed competitive, falling just 3-0.

Meanwhile, there was Division II boys basketball action as the Souhegan Sabers topped Sanborn to start the season 3-0. Also, the first local indoor track action of what is a modified season took place at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, with five local teams competing in a meet hosted by Keene.

And Merrimack blanked Alvirne in the night’s lone wrestling match.

BOYS HOCKEY

KEENE 3,

NASHUA SOUTH-PELHAM 0

The Kings got a good game from goaltender Ethan Robinson, who shut out the Blackbirds over the final two periods after giving up three first period goals, two by Keene’s Leo Ballaro.

The Kings were also hurt by six penalties, but failed to convert on their own 5 on 3 in the first period. Orion Murhpy got the shutout for the ‘Birds.

South-Pelham is slated to host Bishop Brady on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. at Conway Arena.

BOYS BASKETBALL

SOUHEGAN 72,

SANBORN 40

Watch out for the Sabers, who got 24 points from Matt Canavan and 10 from Pete Headington while John McBride owned the boards with 10 rebounds.

Souhegan is at John Stark on Saturday.

PLYMOUTH 44,

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 38

The Bobcats scored only four points in the first quarter but managed 14 in the fourth to pull out the win, despite 10 points from HB’s Andrew Eckman and eight apiece by Jayce Cote and John Kotelly.

Now 0-3, HB will visit Pelham on Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 58,

PLYMOUTH 13

Elisabeth Stapelfeld led the Cavs with 18 points as they are off to a 3-0 start. Daniella allanach added 19 points, while Cheyenne Colbert had eight points and 13 rebounds.

WRESTLING

MERRIMACK 78,

ALVIRNE 0

The Tomahawks dominated, with wins by Connor Sayball at 113 (pin), Evan Torres at 126 (pin), Grant Descheneaux at 132 (pin), Adam Cummings at 145 (injury default by Alvirne’s Kyle Riel), Cooper Carlson at 152 (pin), Hunter Adams at 160 (pin), Brendan Curley at 170 (pin), and Anthony Lesmerises at 182 (pin).

The Tomahawks also received five forfeits.

BOYS & GIRLS TRACK

HAMPSHIRE DOME MINI MEET

Nashua North, South, Bishop Guertin, Souhegan, Merrimack and Keene competed at the Hampshire Dome in Milford, with a limited number of events.

In the boys meet, Nashua South dominated. Panther Michael Curtin took the 55 meters in 6.80 seconds, just ahead of Souhegan’s Tony Garrant (7.01).

South’s Rory Olsen took the 300 meters in 39.37, ahead of teammate Eden Damis (39.77), and Olsen also won the 55 hurdles (8.66), beating Merrimack’s Samuel Epstein (9.09). South’s Juho Hahto was second in the 1500 (4:27.99).

Souhegan’s Wil Jacques and Jackson Steckbeck were one-two in the high jump at 5-8 and 5-6, respectively. South’s Sam Murray took the shot put at 48-9, with Josh Compoh second and North’s Richard Taveras third, ahead of teammate Jack Washam. South’s Olsen, Keith O’Donnell, Juho Hahto and Alex Thibeault won the 4×300 relay. BG was paced by a fourth by Rowan Romanauskas in the high jump and a fifth from Sebastian Zeman in the 600.

In the girls meet, South’s Soraya Ross edged teammate Lyana Braswell in the 55 meters (7.65-7.87). Ross also took the 300 in 44.13, ahead of North’s Rosalinda Tavarez (45.63)

Bishop Guertin got a win from Fiona Doherty in the 600 (1:44.18), ahead of Souhegan’s Emma Herrero (1:51.84). The Cards also won the 4×300 relay, with

Finoa Doherty, Caroline Cairns, Sophia Cote, and Liz White combining for a 3.1707, ahead of Souhegan.

Merrimack got a win by Kailey Dillon in the 55 hurdles in 10.51, with South’s Myasiah Ortiz second (10.77).

North’s Kelechi Okorie took the high jump at 5 feet, ahead of BG’s Audrey Murrin (4-10). The Titans also got a win from Madelyn Novak in the shot put (33-2.5), beating out BG’s Zakayla Beaton (28-6).
