The second Friday night of high school basketball will be a busy one, and with the holiday weeks coming up, it will be the last Friday of major basketball action until January 7.

Locally, it’s a big night for the Nashua High School South girls as they will host Keene in their home opener at the Belanger Gym at 6:30 p.m. The Panthers dropped a tough one-point decision in the final 20 seconds at Londonderry on Monday night.

Conversely, the Panther boys are at Keene and Nashua North is at Timberlane.

A couple of players have highlighted the first couple of games. Nashua North has been paced by Trevor Labrecque, who had 24 points the other night to help the Titans improve to 2-0 and he had 13 in the season opener; South in something we’re not used to has played or even started two freshmen consistently. One, Josh Caruso, has been their leading scorer and another, Alize Roig-Cortes has also stood out.

“Two of them are on the floor a lot,” South coach Nate Mazerolle said. “They were both fantastic (in the opener last Friday) and did a lot of good things (vs. Londonderry) too.”

Right now the story of the local girls season is Milford, which is 2-1 after Wednesday night’s stunning 20-point win over defending Division II champion Bishop Brady. The Spartans entered the season with a 38-game losing streak. Those young players who suffered the growing pains, like junior Bailey Johnson who had 16 the other night, are reaping the benefits now. But get this: three freshmen – Elianna Nassy, LuLu Maguire and Avery Fuller combined for 39 points. Amazing. Milford has tonight off but is scheduled – weather permitting – to visit Pembroke Saturday.

Both the Bishop Guertin boys and girls hoop teams have interesting back-to-backs thanks to BG’s exam schedule. With the school basically starting the school year in mid-August, this has been the Cards’ exam week so no night games were allowed until tonight.

That scrapped games for both teams with Exeter, and now the BG girls will host Londonderry tonight for their second game of the season, then trek to Exeter for a 1:30 game Saturday afternoon.

The BG boys (0-1) are at Londonderry tonight at 7 but then have to face Exeter at the Colligadome Saturday afternoon, also at 1:30.

The Alvirne boys, as of now, are expected to be back in action tonight at home vs. Concord after having Tuesday’s game at Manchester Central postponed til Jan. 18 to comply with health and safety protocols.

The North girls have the night off and will be at Merrimack on Monday, but the Alvirne girls (2-1) will be playing their third game in four nights at Concord.
