It’s another busy school tourney Saturday.
Two local high school volleyball teams will be in action today/tonight seeking championships. At 4:30 p.m., the No. 2 Cavaliers of Hollis Brookline will square off against No. 1 Bedford at Pinkerton Academy’s Hackler Gym in Derry, a rematch of last year’s finals won by the Bulldogs.
Bedford (20-0) beat HB (19-2) in the regular season 3-0 back on Sept. 17 in Bedford. The Cavs last won the title in 2018 with a win over the Bulldogs.
Then, at 7 p.m, the No. 4 Milford Spartans (16-3) vs. No. 2 Coe-Brown (17-2), as Milford seeks its first Division II title since it beat Hollis Brookline in 2002 for what was then the Class I title. The Spartans were last in the title game in 2018, falling to Gilford, whom they upset in the semis this past Wednesday. Milford is the hottest team in Division II with 12 straight wins, but did lose to CB-Northwood at home way back on Sept. 16.
FOOTBALL
Meanwhile, today is a big day in high school football, with four local teams competing.
In the Division I quarterfinals, Bishop Guertin (7-2) will host Salem (6-2) at 6:30 p.m. at Stellos Stadium. The Cards beat the Blue Devils 17-14 back on Sept. 11, but Salem has won five straight.
In Division II, No. 7 Souhegan (5-3) will head up to No. 2 Lebanon (8-0) for a 1 p.m. quarterfinal; the Sabers fell to the Raiders 41-0 in early October.
Third seeded Milford (6-2) will host No. 6 Plymouth (6-3) at 3 p.m. The two teams did not play during the regular season but both fell to No. 1 Timberlane and both beat Bow in terms of common opponents.
No. 3 Campbell (7-2) is one win away from the Division III finals, and will take on No. 2 Trinity (7-1) in the semifinals in Manchester at 1 p.m.. Pelham and Kearsarge are in the other semi.
CROSS COUNTRY
The other main event locally today is the annual Meet of Champions, set for 3 p.m. at Nashua South.
It’s the sport’s big individual race/in-state finale, and there could be a great girls duel between Souhegan’s Chloe Trudel and Bishop Guertin’s MaryKate Finn, the Division II and I overall winners last Saturday, respectively. Should be a good one.
