FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Capsule look at Week 4’s local games

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 24, 2021

Nashua North-South isn’t the only big local football game this weekend, as one might want to put Trinity at Campbell tonight in Litchfield and then Merrimack vs. Bishop Guertin on Saturday as big ones, too.

Here’s your weekly capsule look at the Week 4 local games, with three all-area matchups.

DIVISION I

NASHUA SOUTH (0-3) at NASHUA NORTH (3-0)

WHEN: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadiuim

LAST WEEK: Merrimack 28, Nashua South 26; Nashua North 14, Windham 10.

LAST YEAR: Nashua North 24, Nashua South 7.

FYI: This will certainly be a different atmosphere than a year ago, when only a smattering of fans were allowed to attend (pandemic) and all for the home team then, South. The reality is the Panthers have to win this or their playoff hopes are dashed. The good news for South, which is expected to have backs Josh Compoh and Connor Rowsell at full strength, is they won’t have to deal with graduated Titan Curtis Harris-Lopez any longer. But North junior QB Derek Finlay has shown he’s the real deal.

SALEM (1-2) at ALVIRNE (0-3)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Alvirne High School.

LAST WEEK: Keene 26, Alvirne 7; Pinkerton 49, Salem 21.

LAST YEAR: Salem 46, Alvirne 12.

FYI: A tough matchup for the Jacob Bradshaw-led Broncos, who simply aren’t at the same level of Pinkerton, Londonderry and Salem, who are all in their conference (South). But the Blue Devils, after looking like world beaters in their opener vs. South, really need this win after back to back losses to BG and Pinkerton. Alvirne needs to defend against Salem’s speed, mainly that of back Aidan McDonald.

MERRIMACK (1-2) AT BISHOP GUERTIN (2-1)

WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Londonderry 29, Bishop Guertin 13; Merrimack 28, Nashua South 26.

LAST YEAR: Merrimack 21, Bishop Guertin 14.

FYI: The Tomahawks are developing a solid offense led by QB Kyle Crampton and receiver Shea Goodwin, and now teams have to deal with bruising two-way player Reimello Hyde. Jakob Baker and the Cardinals defense will have their hands full, which will put more onus on the Matt Santosuosso-led BG offense to score points. Guertin can’t get into a track meet on the Motta Field fast surface.

DIVISION II

BOW (0-2) at SOUHEGAN (2-1)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Souhegan’s Saber Field.

LAST WEEK: Plymouth 28, Bow 6; Souhegan 50, Hollis Brookline 8.

FYI: The Falcons, as you may know, suffered a tremendous tragedy a couple of weeks ago when junior Nick Ouellette was killed along with his young brother in a car crash, right now every game is all about emotional recovery. The Sabers, led by freshman QB Romy Jain, can put up the points on field turf with skill players like J.J. Bright, Mitch Hauser and Tony Gallant. They’ll look to do the same here.

MILFORD (2-1) at HOLLIS BROOKLINE (1-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: HBHS turf field.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 50, Hollis Brookline 8; Lebanon 27 Milford 14.

LAST YEAR: Milford 26, Hollis Brookline 24 (regular season); Hollis Brookline 33, Milford 14 (playoffs).

FYI: The Spartans will be looking to bounce back from a tough home loss late vs. Lebanon, with QB Charlie Urda, Logan Barnhill and Caden Zalenski leading the way. They may be a tough order for the Cavs’ defense, which has been pushed around allowing 127 points combined the last two weeks. HB Chris Lones will be looking for positive signs.

DIVISION III

TRINITY (3-0) at CAMPBELL (3-0)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Campbell High School.

LAST WEEK: Campbell 43, Inter-Lakes 8; Trinity 42, Winnisquam 8.

LAST YEAR: Trinity 36, Campbell 0

FYI: These are clearly two of the better teams in Division III that hope to be able to challenge favorite Pelham. The Cougars have been boosted by a solid offensive line and the running of Nate Perry and breakaway threat Garrett Arnold, and have been solid defensively.

The Pioneers have a tough team with some size, including tight end Jordan Joyal, and can turn to running back James Thibault. Should be a good one.
