Local high school boys tennis has a new team to watch:
The Alvirne Broncos.
Alvirne downed Exeter to reach the Division I finals for the first time ever on Thursday, and will take on powerful unbeaten Bedford Saturday at 4 p.m. in the title match at Pinkerton Academy.
“We were absolutely thrilled with a win against a very good Exeter team,” Broncos coach Mike Coulter said. “I couldn’t be more proud of my players and very excited to represent Alvirne in the championship.”
Meanwhile, it was a tough day for another local boys tennis team, Souhegan, which fell to Lebanon in the Division II semis.
In baseball, get ready for Souhegan-Hollis Brookline Part III as both teams won on Thursday.
Today (Friday) Hollis Brookline and Bishop Guertin will square off in the boys volleyball prelims in Hollis.
But, speaking of tennis and Hollis Brookline, today is a big day for the Cavalier girls team as it will be in the 3 p.m. Division II finals at Bedford vs. Windham. The Cavaliers as a program have been to four finals, three in the 1990s, without winning a title. The last time was in 2002, when they lost to Gilford 5-4. Windham beat Portsmouth in the 2017 Division II final and lost to the Clippers in 2018.
“The girls team has not advanced to the championship in a long time,” Cavs first-year coach Dalia Paradie said. “All but one player in the top six are seniors and they felt that they lost an important year of player development and competition because of COVID (in 2020). They’re overjoyed they can come together in their senior year.”
Here’s the lowdown on Thursday’s action:
